I am fortunate to live near Rivanna Trail, so going there is very convenient. It is a welcome oasis in the city, and is reasonably well maintained.

This trail is an absolute gem. It manages to find quiet greenspace in unusual nooks and crannies as it circumnavigates C-ville. Even those well-acquainted with the town will find themselves in places they never knew about. It's a superb escape for residents and out-of-towners alike....More

There are a number of bike shops in town; two that I know offer rentals are Blue Ridge Cyclery and Bike Factory of Charlottesville--both have web sites that you can easily find.
