Built in 1936, The State Theatre operated as a popular movie until the late 1980's. The first film shown was Thanks A Million starring Dick Powell and on November 27, 1988 the State closed its doors after a final showing of Die Hard starring Bruce Willis. The first theatre on the East Coast to be centrally air-conditioned, the State was the flagship of the family-owned Neighborhood Theatres chain which also operated, among others, the Glebe (now a Duron paint store), the Buckingham (now a Post Office) and the Jefferson (now a Chile's restaurant). A multi-million dollar restoration in the late 1990's turned it into the Washington Metro area's favorite new venue for live music and private events. The full theatrical stage is original, as are the 200 balcony seats and both lobbies. The theatre seats on the main floor were removed to allow for the re-design of the auditorium which now accommodates full service dining, standing and dancing areas and two full service bars. The restoration also added a full service restaurant for dining and catering private events.

We love going to the State Theatre. A great venue to see a concert. The food is OK; the service Ok; but the beer is better. I wish they did pitchers. A couple of tips: reserve a table in advance; reservations cost $10 for a table for two but you're guaranteed a good table. And, there is free parking available... More

This place gets some good acts. It's a big old theater with a balcony and some table seating. The staff is friendly and professional. There's a parking garage very near the theater. It has two bars, but when the place is full, you might have to wait in a queue to get a drink. The crowd is generally well behaved.

I love seeing music acts here. This old movie theater has been lovingly restored to its former glory and hosts many national musical acts.. Every spot in the theater has a good stage view. Drinks are good and reasonable in price as are ticket prices. Parking is dicey but manageable if you leave enough time. Lots of great places to... More

The State Theatre is one of the relics of another age - an old vintage theater with live music. From modern groups to 60s, 70s, and 80s retro and cover bands, it's the best small venue for live music in the DC area. Get a seat on the floor if you want to be surrounded by the scene, or sit... More

I went to see The Legwarmers last night with a few friends. The band was amazing and kept us dancing all night long. We parked in the parking garage across the street that has public parking on the weekends. We had dinner at Don and Claire's beach shack right next door. Since it rained, it was nice to have everything... More

I have been here before but never to watch a show while eating dinner. It was pretty cool and comfortable and Peter Murphy was pretty incredible. The food was your standard American fare that didn't really stand out as amazing but that was not why I was really there. They have a good selection of foreign and domestic beers and... More

A re-purposed old movie house (that's what we called them in the old days) that really works. The State Theatre attracts a terrific variety of performing artists (Buddy Guy, Cowboy Junkies, the Legwarmers, too many others to mention), mostly smaller groups. There are "restaurant seatings -- tables in what would be called the "orchestra" section of a theatre but have... More

Certainly one of the finest live performance venues in the Washington Metropolitan Area featuring National Acts and Local Favorites. Excellent sound system and state of the art stage lighting combine to create some truly memorable shows. Nicely designed with a great blend of a dance area near the stage, a table seating area for those who care to dine, traditional... More

My experience at this venue was wonderful, the only complaint I had was it was raining. The parking was extremely convenient and the tickets were a breeze to procure. It is close to our hometown relatively speaking and we had a wonderful time. Sadly, my father recently passed. With that being said, our memories of the show that we attended... More

Recently saw Almost Queen at the State Theatre. Great place. Smaller than the nearby Birchmere but compared to the Fillmore, it has tables. Go for the shows. All reasonable priced and enjoy an intimate experience with the bands. The food is OK and reasonably priced. They could staff with more wait staff. Finally ... And this is really a picayune... More
