- VaishaliMumbai, India38 contributionsMystical magical Gufa a must visitMystical, magical gufa, a must visit for all. There is so much energy inside that has to be experienced yourself. Vasishtha Gufa & Arundhati Gufa are inside a mountain next to the Ganga river bank. Its a very beautiful landscape and was not crowded during our visit so was a very enjoyable experience. Do plan additional time to sit & meditate inside the Vasishtha Gufa it will be a unique memorable experience. There is a tea stall run by a lady on the road at the entrance. Do have tea there & support locals who make their living by working hard.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 March 2024
- DRF15 contributionsa lovely couple hours by the GangesWe’re Western tourists and had no idea that we’d be in Rishikesh while the big Shiva pilgrimage festival, Yanta, which closed down streets throughout the city and a number of temples and holy sites that we planned to see. So, we looked a little East of Rishikesh and found this ashram and temple – it was fantastic! So serene and uplifting. You walk down a steep incline to get down to the headwaters of the Ganges, and there is a little farm, a temple, and a gate to a cave. When you enter, it’s dark – only candles light the inner chamber, but if you let your eyes adjust, you can make out the mats on the floor and the contour of the ceiling. If you’re tall, be careful walking into the inner chamber because the cave ceiling drops a bit. We took about ten minutes to meditate in the outer chamber, and the sound of the birds and the rushing water from the Ganges was uplifting. Afterwards, we walked down to the Ganges and the downstream a bit to a second cave. If you’re not pressed for time, standing aside the Ganges and visiting the second cave shrine are worth the walk.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 July 2024

I thouroughly enjoyed this place along with my cousin. we reached here at 1.30 PM and the temple was closed. It remains closed from 1 pm to 3 pm. One of the occupant offered us food, and we accepted the offer, since we were super hungry. Not only food, the Guruji also gave us Rs.10 Dakshina, which was a surprise. I have kept the note with me as a souvenir.
The area is very peaceful in the bank of the river Ganga. We could not spend much time as the weather was very hot. We want to return here again and spend some more time in the lap of nature.

We visited the Vashishta gufa near Rishikesh , the place where Vashista muni meditated and lived! Wonderful 45 minutes of meditation inside the cave with few strangers but what lovely vibes and exhilarating experience! Right on the river bank and a serene location!

Imagine witnessing the place where Guru of Lord Rama, Seer Vashistha meditated along with his wife.
Vashistha Gufa is a must visit place if you are interested in Indian mythology. The cave is well preserved and well maintained. Please dont forget to sit there and meditate and feel the aura of the place.
Tip: You will have to descent down and climb back from main road so wear good shoes although the both descend and ascend is comfortable. River Ganges is further 100-150 meters from cave and the way is filled with sand and rocks but it is enjoyable. You will get spectacular views from Gufa and upon reaching river, you can enjoy bathing as well. Please remember there are no changing rooms as it is pure pristine natural bank of river.
Go and witness a piece of ancient history

There are two caves there, both close by - Vashisht Gufa and Arundati Gufa. People go there to medidate. It's completely dark in the cave with only an oil lamp. Very calm and peaceful. You have to go down a slightly steep ramp to reach there. We spent about ten minutes in each cave and then descended down to a beautiful rocky beach. We sat about one hour with our feet in the water. Must visit if you want a calm place away from the crowds

It is a meditative den, small, dark, and not really something I would want to see. One can go if they like caves and den. But there is a quiet beach, 10 mins walk from there. That is an amazing place to camp, click pictures, and enjoy silence.

Some 20 minutes drive from Laxman Jhula, better to go by your own car. Place is best suited for meditation.

The real city is rishikesh way past both bridges by the bus stop. Near railway road and many shops . this is the time where the locals live. They also work in this area. But the ram jhula tapovan laxman Jhula areas are not near this railway road area. So the cave is out of town on way out of town heading away up .or heading into town before you get to tapovan. Depends which direction.
Written 25 April 2019
Is it in Rishikesh or more than 20 km away from Rishikesh. In map of Trip Advisor it shows with in city while same name bus stop and place in Google map shows different directions and some 20 k.m. awsy. Please guide.
Written 25 April 2019
The town of Rishikesh is near the bus stop at railway road. This is near the marketplace and the area where the locals live. The Vashistha Cave is headed up river past this area, past the Ram Jhlua Bridge, past Laxman Jhula. So you head out of town near Tapovan. Tapovan and Laxman Jhula are more of the Yoga and tourist area. It is not the Area of Main Rishikesh town.

Is it down the road and one has to go down and climb up again and is it for elderly people easily reachable?
Written 29 March 2019
For Gufa, climbing down and way up is not for elderly. And there is no other way. Best to avoid it for elderly and persons with walking/climbing problems.
Banks of Ganga requires further walking down,

I read some where that there is swami ji there, thought to ask you? is there someone at Vashisht Gufa you can interact with and is always present.
Reason for asking is that i am travelling there on sunday - 9th april 2017. i want to make a small video clip for my channel on Youtube and cover this place.
Since you have traveled to this place, i thought to ask you
thanks in advance

Thanks Sundar S & Akr - I got to meet Swami ji - video not allowed. Had a chance to be in the Gufa for half an hour in silence and another half an hour when people were chanting om namo shivai....
Life time experience of silence. There is tremendous energy there in the Gufa, lot of peace observed.
For readers of this review - Gufa is closed for 2 hours in afternoon 1 to 3 pm. If planning visit - keep that in mind..
thanks
