I was quite fascinated with that big tower surrounded with sandbags. Quite unique! There were a couple of monuments before it as well! One of these monuments promoted PA, or in English "Peace". There were some exhibitions outside that looked like WWI. It was quite interesting! It gave me an opportunity to realize how bad this war was! There were... More

The first Yser Tower was built at Dixmude in 1928, to commemorate fallen Belgian and French soldiers in the unending battle for the River Yser. The tower was created largely through the efforts of WWI Flemish veterans with a passionate belief in the parity of the Flemish in Belgium and the promotion of Peace, Freedom and Tolerance. Overnight on 15/16... More

You can see it from far away: a great dominant of Diksmuide. The exhibition in the tower will take you back in time to the era of WW1 and WW2. I recommend to go to the top of the tower where you can enjoy a beautiful (and little bit windy) view on the country.

We also visited the Trench of Death that is close by and I recomend to see them both for anyone remotely intrested in history. You start by taking the elevator up to the top of the tower which has a lovely view of the area with illustrations of how it looked during WWI. You then walk down again( it is... More

Memorial museum to remind us of the devastation of the war. Lots of information and innovative methods to get ideas across. Film on the ground floor showing without words life in the trenches. Lift takes you to the top of the tower. Don't mind the observatory at the top. The museum then takes you down the floors. Good and well... More

great experience in the grounds of the tower and the tower itself. There is a lift and some of our party rode up and walked down to the various levels. Each floor has a specific museum aspect and it is well laid out. Particularly liked the post WW1 huts used as living accommodation in the grounds.

Impressive monument with dual purpose. Most important is to remember the Great War and all the soldiers that fought and lost their lives on Flanders Fields, but also a part of Belgian cultural history and the quest for recognition of the Flemish identity is evoked. In clear weather, the rooftop terrace offers a magnificent view of the surroundings. Free parking... More

There is the remnants of the old tower and then the huge new on, which looks a bit out of place. You can climbs the tower for the views and there are many interesting details about the war to be found visiting this site.

Impressive tower with a message: no more war in 4 languages stamped all over the place. Superb panorama from atop the 84 meters high tower.
