I attended Coeur de France for two weeks from mid July 2023. As so many reviews have said, Coeur de France is an exceptional French Language School. I had very high expectations going in. As a teacher myself (in Canada) and also having taught English abroad, I understand the unique skills it takes to help students learn a second language. The instructors at CDF have these skills and more. The welcome, the warmth of the school, the coffee breaks mid class with all the other instructors and students, the Monday wine and cheese evening, the excursions, all of it make for an environment conducive to speaking French, learning and socializing. The charming town of Sancerre is your extra language teacher. Everyone is so welcoming!!! I hadn’t really been practicing my French much over the last two decades, so I had forgotten a lot. I was able to not only refresh what I knew but surpass it. I gained confidence and felt very proud of myself being able to shop and eat in the village, chat with locals and my instructors and fellow students. Don’t miss La Pomme d’Or. one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Le Lichou has yummy pastries and la madame is super friendly. And Cafe des Arts, I ate there very often and it felt like home sitting with a glass of Kir Sancerrois and enjoying the view. I am excited to return again this coming summer. Wt oui Marianne, finalement je l’utilise correctement - « c’est la meme CHOSE pour moi »! 😀😀

I stayed with my for a week in November and had one-on-one tutoring with Marianne and Guillaume. It really helped my confidence. Both Marianne and Guillaume are very sensitive and gentle no matter how much you mangle your expression. Marianne in particular as the principal is an exceptional teacher. Very patient and extremely thoughtful with her clear and neat corrections which are hand written and personalized. I’ve done quite a few other French courses with leading well known French schools but these lessons with Coeur de France took my French to a new level of fluency. It was a delight to walk around a very picturesque small hilltop town and be personally introduced to the post-mistress, the grocer, the cafe regulars and the wine merchant, all of whom were very warm in response to my stumbling expression of French.

Be aware that Sancerre is a small wine town in the middle of a great wine producing region of France. This adds another layer of enjoyment of course, but it’s not a big city. So don’t expect convenience stores on your doorstep. It’s a different experience. Indeed in a way, it really is the warm heart of beautiful France and the school truly reflects this local French character, with warmth, politeness and sensitivity. The restaurants were numerous and great and the country side is simply beautiful as were the characters of the people we met.

Marianne taught my beginner's course (two weeks) and Nathalie my intermediate course (two weeks). Both teachers were enthusiastic, professional, and efficient. My French improved beyond my expectations.

The courses were well structured to facilitate the learning of French grammar, comprehension, speaking, and vocabulary. Periodically, Sancerre became our classroom when we visited shops and restaurants as a group and engaged with the friendly people in this quaint town. Our accomodations were comfortable and within easy walking distance of the school.

Thank you, Marianne and Nathalie. The entire experience is now a delightful memory.

I spent a week at Coeur de France staying in the Gabriel apartment situated within the chateau. The apartment was well equipped and comfortable for my stay in Sancerre. Lessons were in a small group of five with Marianne as our tutor. The programme was very well structured designed to reinforce grammar and encourage as much speaking as possible (en francais bien sur.) Marianne was an excellent teacher! She originates from Sancerre and her enthusiasm for students sampling the local culture and attaining individual language goals was clearly evident. I absolutely loved my stay and am hoping to return next year.
Thank you Marianne and Gerard

I attended Coeur de France for the second time: last summer for one week ( definitely not enough) and two weeks this summer. The faculty are all excellent, have a wonderful sense of humor, and are very patient. The class sizes are very small - between 3-5 students, so I was able to get the attention needed to succeed. I also took one-to-one conversation lessons. I found these lessons to be tailored to my needs as well, and felt my conversational French improved quite a lot. The school has a close relationship with the town of Sancerre, and our class frequently went to the fromagerie, pâtisserie, charcuterie…to experience speaking with the proprietors. Cœur de France also arranges many additional experiences after class. We went to a goat farm and saw how chèvre is made, we walked to a small local vineyard for a tasting and learned so much about wine. They also arranged for a trip to the local farmers market. It was such a great experience to speak with the vendors and to have the opportunity to purchase incredible produce, meats and fish.

Cœur de France also offers housing opportunities. Both summers, I chose to stay in the Gabriel studio apartment in the school’s building. It is a charming apartment with large windows that open up to the quiet street. The ceiling has been painted with the angel Gabriel and small putti. It has a washer and dryer, and is well-equipped for cooking.

The town of Sancerre is a small old village with cobbled, narrow streets. It has numerous cafés, shops, and wine stores that offer tastings. During July there were even concerts in the town square. It’s a small but thriving community. I look forward to coming back to Coeur de France.

This was my second trip to Sancerre and the attraction on both occasions was the Coeur de France. Last year I spent a month at the school and had wonderful tuition in a very small group setting. This year I had a week of one on one tuition with Marianne. On both occasions I had the pleasure of interacting with a great group of like minded students. Marianne and her team of experienced teachers are highly skilled and are totally devoted to providing a wonderful and meaningful learning experience for all students. The welcome drinks on Monday provide an excellent opportunity to meet other students and to team up to experience the wonderful selection of restaurants in this very quaint and picturesque town. If you enjoy walking and hiking you will enjoy the wonderful and very safe tracks in and around Sancerre. The locals are very friendly and help you along with your French speaking.

Marianne has an amazing work ethic and is an absolutely fantastic teacher. Her patience and style of teaching sets the scene for a great learning environment.

My wife, Blossom, and I are both advanced french speakers but felt in need of a refresh as we had neglected the language for 10 years while we learned Italian. We decided to have 2:1 lessons and had a very useful and enjoyable week with Véronique. We worked from an advanced course book supplemented with interesting articles and general conversation. Véronique was able to adapt her plans for the week as she better understood our strengths and weaknesses. Apart from the 17 hours in class we were set challenging homework. We had our own car and Véronique was able to suggest suitable excursions.
We spoke to other teachers in coffee breaks and would say the whole team was very strong and Marianne stayed in touch with us.
Our accommodation was in an apartment 2 minutes from the school.
The town is small. Inevitably competition from supermarkets and internet has caused some loss of commerce. However, we ate at 4 different restaurants at different levels from lunchtime omelettes to a fine dining dinner. In addition, there is a good bookshop and we would recommend a visit to the Maison des Sancerres.
The school more than met our expectations and we would be more than happy to return.

I traveled to the school to learn French after my pilgrimage trip in northern Spain, having always wanted to learn the beautiful language and culture after visiting France several times.
I was a little nervous to go alone after leaving my friends behind in Spain and I was already feeling a little homesick. However, after a warm welcome by Marianne upon arrival at the school and an evening reception on the first day of class to meet classmates and the professors, I immediately felt at ease. I was also fortunate to have wonderful neighbors who also happened to be in my class. After only a week of group classes with Marianne and several private lessons with Nathalie (who are patient, excellent and very engaging teachers), I came away with basic fundamentals of the French language as well as a strong passion to continue learning!!! I not only enjoyed the classes……it was fun to also explore the local shops in the charming village and farmers’ market in a nearby town with our teachers to practice our French “live” and supplement our classes.
Overall, it was a very rich and memorable experience that I highly recommend! By the end of the week I wished I could have stayed longer! I left a part of my heart in Sancerre so I know I will be back!!! A l’annee porchaine!

My husband (72) and I (65) decided to learn French at this late time of our lives. The school was so well structure and, after 3 weeks, we came away with a wonderful framework to continue our French journey! Our teachers spoke French to us from the first day, switching to English rarely, and were incredibly patient as we struggled with the French pronunciation!!! We learned a lot thanks to awesome teachers, curriculum, and teaching style!!! We would recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn or improve their language skills and we will definitely return!!!

Excellent teacher but disappointed in the school experience.
I expected the excursions to be included in the program not an additional extra fee.
The school compared to other french schools isn’t very hospitable and didn’t offer a sense of group activity. I felt it was teach class , then you’re left to your own devices. There was no farewell dinner with teachers or any interaction other than the class.
In addition, I had an accident on my bike outside the school, but as a student, I expected some duty of care to follow up on my health. I needed medical attention and struggled.
Overall, a poor experience except if you just want a good teacher, expect nothing else

Bonjour Daina, Thank you for your review. I’m sorry that you felt Coeur de France wasn’t what you thought it would be. Let me respond to your points. Excursions: As detailed on Coeur de France website, each class every day includes out of class activities, they are part of your instruction and no extra charge. You will recall that your teacher accompanied you on various walks around the village where you interacted with local native speaker shop keepers, waiters, etc. The teacher then reviews your experience with you. This is part of the teaching experience and is included in all courses. However, the OPTIONAL cultural excursions/activities are separate out-of-class opportunities to use your French skills while on a range of activities and excursions (such as wine tastings, picnics, goat cheese farm visits, etc,) that are offered by guides and organisations (not the school). Of course, you pay the service provider directly (not the school) for any OPTIONAL excursions you may choose to sign up for. Again, these are indeed optional (not required), Coeur de France isn’t paid for them and the price the guide charges is clearly noted on the list of the optional excursions that are available that week. Group activities: You were in a Group class with several other classmates. In addition to the daily out-of-class activities that happen every day and that are included in your class (as described above), you also had a long list of the OPTIONAL cultural activities/excursions offered daily. Again, those optional activities are there to provide all students the opportunity to use their new French skills in the real world on their own time, independently, out side of school, while participating in activities that are of interest to them. Of course, being optional all students are free to pick and choose to participate in whatever interests them — or not — and it seems that you may have chosen not to. There is no farewell dinner because we know that many students prefer to celebrate their last night in Sancerre privately with their new friends / classmates and some depart immediately after class for travel reasons. What we do know is that all students are present on Monday (the first day of the week) and that’s why each and every Monday evening at 5:30 pm the school hosts a (free) wine and cheese “meet and greet” reception open to all students. This gives all the students a chance to meet each other the very first day of class and to get to know their teachers too. Perhaps you didn’t attend, but the vast majority of students do. Bike accident: I hope you’re feeling better now! As you may remember, you didn’t inform staff of the accident until the following day and only when staff asked you directly about it. To be fair, one cannot expect the school to follow up on your care when the school wasn’t even made aware of the accident until the next day. In reviewing the incident with staff, I found that your classmate in the apartment next to you told us the day after it happened that you fell off of your bike on Monday afternoon (this may be why you weren’t at the Monday wine reception?). A passerby in a car gave you a lift to the local emergency room where the doctor bandaged your scrapes and gave you some Tylenol. No serious injuries thank goodness! When you returned to the school later that day, a fellow student who is a doctor examined you and concurred with the emergency room doctor: a few scrapes, no serious injuries. This would really have been the ideal time to inform staff of your accident, but you chose not to. Perhaps you weren’t feeling well enough. The next day when staff was finally informed by your classmate of the incident, your teacher went immediately to see you personally before your class and asked if you needed anything. You replied that you didn’t, but that it was a painful fall and you worried that you may not be able to make the bike trip around France that you had planned with your husband. I hope that all is well now and that you did mange the bike trip with your husband after all! Amicalement Gérard
