Stunning Scenery

Well worth a trip to enjoy the splendour and ruggedness of the Gran Sasso Mountains. Be wary of weather conditions as they can change a moments notice

It's easy to confuse and imagine that the characters from Game Of Throne will show at the middle of the way. Wild horses and crazy mountain views will accompany you until you get to the observatory.

Beautiful views across the valleys as you drive up. Some incredible pictures to be taken, wild horses wondering the landscape, some let you stroke them if you know what you're doing. Good start for hikes upto a couple of the summits on a sunny day.

We went for the spring flowers and were not disappointed, in fact we could not, in our wildest dreams, have imagined the range of colours, intensity, and types of flower. The area itself is also so much more, views, walks and scenery. It's a must do if you are in the area - we went there for three days and... More

Good place for short ski trip when visiting Rome. Rome is 75 minutes away and the cable up to the mountains is only a few minutes drive from the highway. Tickets can be bought at the base. There are 6 slopes served by two ski lifts, and we had good fun and lots of snow. There is a restaurant at... More

We stopped at the Rifugio Campo Imperatore to see the rooms where Mussolini had been held prior to his dramatic airplane escape in 1943. The weather was awful, even though it was early October: rainy, cold, foggy and brutally windy. We were greeted by the gents who are running the ski resort/hotel/restaurant, who eagerly served us lunch (the only other... More

Aside from being the place where many spaghetti westerns were filmed, this place is another world! In summer, the fields full of grazing cows and sheep, fields of flowers, picnic at the Ristoro Rucciante where you buy the meat and cheese, but bring your own picnic supplies is out of this world. In winter, the white expanse of snow, great... More

Campo Imperatore a magnificent tour We left after breakfast (Fonter Cerreto) on a discovery. To make a long story short: incredibly impressive. and now the long story: you drive constantly between two mountain massifs on a kind of plateau, total zen and nothing else. After 20 minutes you can make a detour to a great panorama (hotel Campo Imperatore). Back... More

Especially end of May, the flowers on the high plane are wonderful. You can reach the Campo easily from Acca Lascio bed & breakfast. Furthermore ther are several very old villages nearby, perched on the hill tops. When you want to climb the Gran Sasso it self, then you have to come later, unless you have full mountain Climbing gear... More

Two weeks ago my family and I rode the tram up the side of Gran Sasso to Campo Imperatore that was firmly above treeline, and a winter wonderland. Skiers abounded in every direction, but sadly we didn't have time to partake in this, my favorite endeavor. However, we did get to spend nearly two glorious hours, exploring the old hotel... More
