It was built in the XVIII century to defend the Machico beach. The fort features a triangular shaped plant with one of its angles facing the sea. There are some cannons in the fortress you can access through a small gate and staircase. In 1940...More

This fort is nearly on the promenade. It gives a high view of the sea and promenade. Entry is free. There are some canons.

The fort is on the seafront. Free entrance but not much to see. The highlight is the views from the "battlements" over the seafront area. Occasional free evening concerts are held here - look for the posters around town.

We found the fort when we were walking around. The fort must have been used for some sort of defence. Beautiful water lilies in the moat.

Walked around the beach and found this yellow castle. Free entry to the upper level which was just a flat area with some rusty cannons. An office was manned by tourist information. It would have been greatly enhanced by some signage giving its history.
