Over-looking the bay of Machico lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. The MACHICO and the DESERTAS courses are the ones usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS course, though slightly plain, maintains the same game level.

I have been playing this course twice this week: first Desertas and Serras, next Desertas and Machico. Each time with strong wind, forcing me to play my very best golf! Desertas and even more Machico are absolutely superb: they both feature mountainside layout and many wide-open holes with breathtaking views to Machico and to the west-end rocks through the Ponta... Loved coming back to play on this unspoilt natural golf course. We played the blue course and yellow course with a buggy (recommended) and had a great family game. The blue side is part of the madeira open championship course and has stunning views of the atlantic ocean, we liked the contrast of finishing on the flatter but very scenic... More

Played here many times in varying conditions! New Year a new experience, very green but very true and fast greens ( compared to the UK!) Personally I love this place! Not too busy Reasonable prices (thru your hotel) Good food & drink Challenging course off the whites Great welcome If you like a course with stunning views, a lot of... More

Played here twice in last week, and I like the sent up. 3 Nine hole courses and you get allocated the two you are to play that day and times for each of the courses, I think this works well, and I guess most of the time allows you to have a quick refreshment between the 2 nines. Nice clubhouse... More

High up at the eastern end of the island, this golf club presents a couple of challenging courses. The views are remarkable ( but can get clouded) and the restaurant offers a modest lunch at reasonable prices, so its well worth the trek up (by car) even if you are not playing. Its not a very large car park though... More

I just finished playing the course this morning with a pre-booked 8am tee time. My first impression was very good. The club house is really nice and the nearby greens looked to be in excellent condition. I used the practice putting green and it confirmed my initial impression. It was immaculate as was the chipping green. However, things went a... More

Santo da Serra Golf is a 5 star golf course on the east side of Madeira. Quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of Funchal!

This is by far the best golf course on the island. Every hole is a challenge for any golfer of any handicap. The courses are championship quality and the food in the clubhouse is excellent.
