Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The old house contains the only cellar with floating floor open to the public. A unique experience, the floor is suspended by rope from the ceiling. You can see the water below if you peer down the side, and feel the floor wobbling. The other rooms are interesting too, and show how the house would have been furnished etc. Admission includes entry to the larger museum building across the square, which has ornate plasterwork. When we visited there was an exhibition of drawings and paintings, I think by a local artist.

We just went to one of the two venues, the one with the floating cellar, and it was very interesting and fun. Old furniture, pieces of household articles and best of all the floating cellar, which for kids is quite a thrill. Edam is a lovely city and when walking about don’t miss this attraction.

Dont miss this "crooked old museum" nor a walk around this small but historic town with its impressive church, old streets and a history of flooding! because of this the buildings cannot have cellars! with a fluctuating water table, there is the square with its old cheese auction house and lovely architecture, a second church with its wonderful bell tower which rings every 15mins, so much to see just watch your step as the roads and streets have very irregular surfaces!!

The museum is in two buildings, the old town hall and an old merchants' house. These buildings are interesting by themselves. The contents of the mechants' house are what you'd expect in most Dutch towns with a history of some importance (and that's already quite good!). To be rated excellent one needs to present something unique, and I think one gets that in the town hall, where the gigantic shoes of a former inhabitant of Edam are presented, along with her painting, and a painting of an extravagantly bearded man. Set in a typical small old Dutch town environment, I was very pleased with my visit. Seeing the church tower with its bell ringers' guild finished it off. And I didn't even mention the cheese.

I thoroughly enjoyed this museum, a lot more than I expected to, to be honest. It is very quaint (with quite steep and small stairs!) and as a lot of other reviewers have already stated, the basement is a must see!
The staff are so lovely, we had a great conversation with one worker and she gave us a lot of information about the history of the house and what not.
The audio tour guide is included with the price of €5, which is always great in my opinion.
You can also visit the town hall across the road, which has more interesting paintings, also included in the price.
Really glad I decided to visit.

First of all make sure you get in at the right time. If it's too busy just stroll around beautiful Edam some more and come back later. One moment the house is full (and less enjoyable) the next you have it almost all to your self. The size of it will make you realize how we've 'expanded'. I was especially impressed with the floating cellar (that I almost missed). When in the kitchen watch out for the small steps to the cellar that is actually a floating 'container' that could rise and sink with whatever level the sea demanded. What an invention! Pushing the cellar slightly with your foot you realize how people have been dealing with the perils of Water in every way and how intimate the relationship with the powers of nature in those days has been; ship and house suddenly seem more related than diverse.

Great access to a very old house. You are allowed to walk through each room. Very well restored and maintained. We bought cheese down the street from a chesse market that has been around 600 years!

Take Bus #312/314/316 from Amsterdam Bus station (level 2 of Amsterdam train station) to Edam. It is a short 30mins ride.
Edam is a small town. Can be done together with Volendam & Marken. From Edam, take a bus #312/314/316 to Volendam where u can catch a ferry at the Harbour area to Marken.
Edam Museum is located along the canal in an original canal house. The artefacts are placed like they were in an original house. The cellar is a floating one though I couldn’t tell the difference. There is a free audio guide in different languages including English. Just scan, listen and u get a good narration of the history and explanation. A bit of caution, need to navigate narrow steep circular stairs, thus not so suitable for those with mobility problem.
Overall, I like this place.

This museum is all about the cellar. There are actually two venues (ticket gets you into both) but make sure you visit the old house. Really cool old house from the 1500s with a weird floating cellar!

We enjoyed seeing one of the oldest houses in town. The audio guides were very helpful. Fascinated by the short beds where people slept sitting up. Worth the climb to the upper floors. Apprcated the pride this little city takes in showing off this charming and historical gem.
