Half Day Martinborough Winery Tour from Wellington

94 reviews
An hour or so north of Wellington, Martinborough is fast making a name for itself as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s leading wine regions. Each weekend, Wellingtonians make the trek over the Remutakas to escape to this European-style wine village. This small group tour is a convenient way to visit Martinborough. There’s no need to stress about driving on country backroads, and no need to plan the day’s itinerary - leaving you to focus on the wine and the iconic scenery.

Vaguely aware of the label, biking past and did a u turn back, which was the correct decision. Shawn the winemaker/owner is a character, caustic but in a fun way, calls it as he see's it. Pinot Noir's were good but highlight the fortified wines - Apres. An entertaining cellar door which you should not miss.

Shaun is an excellent host - have heard that he is an original and that he is passionate about his wines - can't argue!. He sorted out the wines we like and gave us all the information about them including how to drink them and when (anytime and anywhere). It's not a flash winery - what you see is what you get and that's just how we like it. Shaun had plenty of stories and made the tasting really memorable. Loved his reds - the 2013 Pinot Noir has great depth and we managed to liberate a bottle for later enjoyment. Also forced him to sell a couple of others - next time we're in Martinborough we will certainly be back. Highly recommend

Shawn Brown kicked us 3 girls out because we were sitting on a table and talking to each other while enjoying the wine. He didn't give us a reasonable explanation why we had to leave (except the above said). Why provide a seating area if you are not allowed to use it? Why invite people to your winery if you don't like people to talk? Furthermore, whenever he poured us a new glass of wine, we would expect some explanation about the specific wine from him, asking interested questions. However, he was very snippy and short from the beginning. He was inexplicably rude. I can absolutely NOT recommend you to go to Muirlea Rise.
