We promote an appreciation and understanding of animal and habitat...

We promote an appreciation and understanding of animal and habitat preservation through the use of quality exhibits and educational programs. Mill Mountain Zoo was founded in 1952 as a nursery-rhyme themed petting zoo that featured farm animals, birds, and native Virginia wildlife. For the first twenty-five years, we were operated by Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department. In 1978, the Roanoke Jaycees renewed the zoo and replaced old exhibits to create a place appealing to all ages. Governance was turned over to the Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia, Inc. in 1988 (more commonly known as Mill Mountain Zoo). In the early 1990's, a citizens' committee created a master plan for exhibitions, visitor amenities, and expansion of the site to our current eight acres. Other improvements included new exhibits and an upgrade of infrastructure. In 1995, Mill Mountain Zoo first received accreditation from the AZA, which sets the highest standards in the nation for zoos. Of our nation's 2,000 government-licensed animal exhibition facilities, only about 200 qualify for AZA accreditation. AZA membership also provides a network of zoological expertise and reciprocal member arrangements with zoos across the country. Within Virginia, only four AZA accredited facilities exist-Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach, the Virginia Living Museum and the Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk.

Small zoo

Visited the zoo and saw the very few animals. There were magnificent views of the Roanoke valley. The snow leopard was beautiful and easily seen.

This is one of the smallest zoos I've ever been to, and I went around 1 2ish all the animals were asleep. Granted it was late in the season it still doesn't change the size of the place. Staff was friendly though so A+ for that.

Mill Mountain Zoo is a beloved destination in the Roanoke Valley. It's not fancy or big, and it's not going to wow you. However, it you're looking for a pleasant walking experience, a clean environment and a few animals to gaze at, this is the place. Ideal for young children! Be sure to ride the Zoo Choo (in season). But... More

This zoo is decent. I was here in the middle of the summer and there must be Oak trees surrounding the zoo because I had a severe allergy attack. The visitor center is great and I loved seeing the bees. If you are up seeing the Roanoke star it is worth the visit.

We enjoyed our trip to Mill Mtn Zoo. We were there when the larger animals were all awake and it was so great seeing the snow leopard and other larger animals alert, active and up-close. It is a small zoo but it's in a very nice setting with the Roanoke star adjoining the property. We liked the train ride and... More

Nice fall day and we decided to take the kids (3 and 8 yrs old) here to kill some time. The walk up to the zoo was very pretty...a quaint path through what would be the flower gardens if it wasn't fall. Prices were very reasonable- $9 for adults and $7 for the kids. 2 and under is free. The... More

Very few animals, they are kept in small enclosures. Don't waste your money, go to a bigger zoo with more to offer.

Imagine, if you will, an intimate zoo setting, at the top of a mountain. That's exactly what you have here. Perched near the summit of Mill Mountain, this zoo offers a stunning atmosphere. There are several observation decks that look over the city of Roanoke. The zoo itself is small, but still took me a few hours to get through.... More

Nice, oldish small zoo. A pleasant way to spend an hour. Many of the animals are nocturnal so a visit on a sunny day, as we did, presented sleeping or hiding animals. Also a lot of the enclosures require you to observe the animals behind glass windows. We found in this sunny day the glare off the windows made observation... More

We visited Mill Mountain Zoo when we needed to fill up an hour before checking into a hotel. What a pleasant surprise it was! We stayed for over 2 hours and enjoyed every minute. It is well maintained and has thorough descriptions and explanations for each animal. The well-tended grounds add to the experience.
