We walked across the road from the Hotel Roanoke and collected an assortment of (free!) information (and maps) of Roanoke and the surrounding area. The staff was helpful -- assisting with making notes on the map showing locations we planned to visit.

Didn't realize that the visitor center was also the site of the O. Winston Link Museum and restored Roanoke Norfolk & Western Railway Passenger Station. Awesome history as told to us by our tour guide.
