The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We are longtime fans of Blackfriars, and "She Stoops to Conquer" surely did not disappoint. The play is quite funny and the sensational ASC cast took full advantage of it. The 3 leads, Lee Fitzpatrick, Gregory Jon Phelps, and the ever-wonderful John Harrell, were terrific. The music during the pre-show and intermission were, unfortunately, not up to par as the... Take your favorite sweetheart to Staunton for an adventure with the cast at the American Shakespeare Theater! The setting is awesome and such a variety of plays from which to select! Take advantage of package deals through Stonewall Jackson or B&B's within walking distance. You will want to come back over and over!!

Interesting evening! Bought tickets early, although that didn't appear necessary on this particular night. Excellent sightlines for virtually every seat in an intimate theatre. Helpful, friendly staff and excellent staging made for a delightful evening!!

Dont miss seeing a play in this gorgeous theater. And dont worry, even if you are intimidated by Shakespeare those wonderful actors make it easy -- it is a very contemporary reading of the plays. The theater gives you a feeling you are part of the action, and indeed, those sitting on the stage sheets do become that. Time zipped... More

Everybody has fun. The actors enjoy performing. The audience enjoys the perfomomance. Even the kids enjoy the spectacle. Especially those who get to sit up on the sides of the stage. And of course the playhouse itself is a historical and educational delight. No matter if you enjoy shakespeare, don't like him or (especially) if you have never seen him... More

This production was truly memorable.. Fernando Lamberty as Othello and Rick Blunt as Iago are simply superb, but the entire cast is outstanding. Recommend the Blackfriars Playhouse to all who love Shakespeare. You will not be disappointed. And Staunton is a perfect setting for a trip that can combine the arts, good food, and historical attractions in a place of... More

We saw both a Saturday matinee and an evening performance. It was loads of fun (as usual). We get the Lords Chairs along the side of the stage, but any seat in the house is good. If you have the opportunity to see Return to the Forbidden Planet, do it. It was great.

Go and enjoy theater in Staunton. It was FUN and FUNNY. We had never seen Shakespeare plays before and thought it might be boring -- but it was NOT boring at all.
