Historic Jamestowne is the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America. Ongoing archaeology at the site of James Fort has changed our understanding of the struggles and triumphs of early 1600s life in Virginia. Living history programs and an archaeology museum tell the story of this dramatic rediscovery. The site is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia.

Really took me back to colonial times ... although I am sure I would not have just been free to walk around the streets like I did on this day ;-) ... but awesome to take in the history!

Explore the first permanent English settlement in North America, established in 1607 by John Smith. You can spend several days here if you want to get really immersed in the history our country's early settlers. We just spent several hours. Our one hour guided tour was lead by a very well informed National Park Service Ranger who had about 35... More

Historic Jamestowne is not flashy but for the curious it's a wonderful experience. The guides are knowledgeable and do a good job of bringing the town to life in their historical facts and stories.

The partnership between the National Park Service and the private organization Preservation Virginia works well here as each group maintains its half of the park well. The NPS has a great welcome center where you purchase tickets and it manages the historic section known as New Town. Costumed employees portray early settlers who talk about what it was like to... This site offers a Park Service Visitor Center, the Historic Site itself, a museum run by Virginia Preservation, and guided tour by a very knowledgeable VP tour guide. I learned so much and didn't want to leave. This is where it all started. Well worth the visit.

So many of us have been taught the Pilgrims started the first English colony in the United States. WRONG! That was Jamestown. At this site you can see reconstructions of the original fort and the layout of the original town with foundations marked. A nice little museum has artifacts found on the site and explains very well what happened there... More

If you are in williamsburg you must take a day to explore Jamestown. It is rich in history and very scenic. Lots to see and do and keep the youngest of travelers engaged.
