This beautiful historic church is deeply interwoven into the history of Williamsburg. Due to COVID the church itself was closed when I visited, but they still have active church services and offer tours if you're able to book early enough.

Even without direct access to the inside though, the gates are open during business hours so that you can tour the historic grounds and graveyard.

Bruton Parish Episcopal Church was lovely inside and out. We were welcomed and invited to attend a service and/or a concert that was being held in the church that evening. The church is in excellent condition and pews are marked with former members such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

This carefully maintained historic church is still a working church, with regular weekly services. Church volunteers are on hand to answer questions. There are pews with the names of the most likely attendees is each row.

The first Anglican church in Colonial Williamsburg is the Bruton Parish Church was once used as a hospital and storehouse during the Battle of Yorktown. There is a cemetery on the grounds that contains the remains of Confederate and Union soldiers. We arrived as the evening Palm Sunday service was ending and thus were unable to go inside the church. I noticed chairs were set up in the yard, probably for an earlier service as attendees were exiting the church. The Parish House is located one block away on Duke of Gloucester Street. We will have to come another time to view the interior.

We were so disappointed to find that the cemetery was closed all week due to covid. We were able to pop in for about 10 minutes one Sunday after service was over. The gentleman closing up the church ran us off and seemed quite exasperated with the overall situation. It is understandable due to covid however just very disappointing that it's no longer a viable part of your Colonial Williamsburg experience. I could understand the church building being closed because of covid restrictions but the outdoor cemetery doesn't make much sense since everything else in CW is open outdoors.

I am very sorry for your disappointment. If your travels bring you back to Williamsburg, please check posted signs at the church for hours, or the website. We have returned to Sunday services and daily visiting made possible by the Bruton Guides. Please do return when you can.

I visited the church on Sunday morning with a friend and took communion at the Mass. The church itself was beautiful and impressive for an early Colonial building. The congregation was friendly, the liturgy and music excellent and participation very full and lively. It was exactly what a good parish should provide. Highly recommended for Anglican or Episcopalian visitors.

Geocaching brought us here. We didn't go inside, but we did tour the cemetery. Lots of history here. There was a service of some sort in the cemetery when we first arrived, so we came back after a bit. Definitely a place to stop and learn.

As a pastor, I was very interested in this. It was really cool to step into the history of this church. What amazing me even in more is that it is not just the history, but the church still functions today. I believe that all of those giving information in the church are current members who not only knew the history but could speak about what they do today.

The church is a functioning parish church for the area and is open to the public. Check the CW program guide or church bulletin board to see when the next organ recital is scheduled. It is a delight to go in the evening withmuch of interior lit with candles and listen to a guest organist. Sit in the pews that Washington, Jefferson, Madison and others satin back in the 18th century.

We really enjoyed our 20 minutes in the old Bruton Parish Church. It's a beautiful interior space, and the tour guides were very helpful and friendly.

What is never acknowledged, however, is that the enforced labor of African slaves created the wealth used to build the Church and to maintain it during most of its history.
