Jefferson Museum of Art & History is located in Port Townsend's historic City Hall building. The Museum features award-winning exhibits that display our unique cultural history of Maritime, Native American, and Early Settler life throughout its multiple galleries. The historic courtroom is now a rotating art gallery, displaying the works of noted artists. Once Port Townsend's Fire Hall, Courtroom, Jail and Police Station in the late 1800s, the building itself has many stories to tell! During the summer, the Museum offers historic walking tours of our beautiful Victorian seaside city. The Jefferson County Historical Society also operates the historic Rothschild House as well as the Commanding Officers Quarters at Fort Worden which are open to the public from May through September.

We were intrigued with the abundant history in this town, as is evident throughout the museum. My one complaint is that there is way too much information shared about the history of prostitution in Port Townsend in days-gone-by. Our children were not on this trip...More

The spooky jail and the firehouse in the basement were the big hit with the grandkids, also the toy corner with old toys they could play with and hats to try on.

Setting is beautiful, but does not have as many exhibits as it seems there could/should be. Beautiful large old courtroom is presently filled with paintings; large open space that could/should show more local history. We've visited small local history museums all over the country and...More

We met Sam who had lots of stories about Port Townsend and the area. Really nice little museum. Like their sign says, "a creepy jail" that will trill the kids.

Humble and illuminating, this small museum starts with a short film about the history and spirit of the area. The exhibits give an excellent feel for what the area was like when settled, the different populations, and the drama of living in a not-that-long bygone...More
