This part of West Virginia was a hotbed of activity during the Civil War. Although no major battles were fought here there were a number of skirmishes. This museum was cobbled together from several historic buildings and contains many artifacts.

We had an informative tour by a personable Americorps docent as an overview, then spent additional time browsing at our own pace. Well worth the $5 charge.

People don't realize that everything that led up to West Virginia becoming a state occurred in and around four small towns, one of them being Beverly, WV. The history within this heritage center is worth taking in and enjoying. There's so much to learn!

We were on a bus trip and stopped only at the museum--not the battlefield or other related sites. However, I'd allow an hour to visit the museum, maybe longer if you're into the nitty-gritty.
