Charming and fun! Camping at Big Bay State Park is a great idea, giving you the ability to do both camping things like hiking and a central place to see this memorable island. During winter only 250 souls live here, but during the summer, the number swells to over 3000! There are hundreds of summer camps along the shore and... More

We visited just after Labor Day and the island was virtually shut down. It was a nice boat ride over but virtually nothing was open so we walked around briefly and took the next ferry back. Nice area I would imagine during the summer months but couldn't experience it. I think maybe 3 businesses were open is all.

...but next time I need to plan better. Very nice ferry ride over to the island. I was under the impression that there would be hours worth of poking around in little shops but this was not the case. There are only a few shops near the dock. We got there later in the afternoon--should have brought our car to... More

The people who live on the island are NOT friendly to visitors, so be aware of that. They are VERY snooty and seem to despise tourists. There are a few gift shops and restaurants. The Beach Club restaurant/bar is the best on the island. If you rent a moped from the moped rental place, it includes a pass to the... More

We have wanted to go here for quite some time so despite some reviews about nothing to see, we were going regardless. I have to say we were surprised as to how little there was to do. Some people indicated that there were lots of shops and restaurants to see - I could count on one hand the number of... More

We did not stay on the island long, but we got to check it out for future visits. The ferry ride is smooth and takes about 20 minutes. It has a good schedule that offers plenty of time options. Good bike trail or place for hiking. Crazy bar called Toms Burned Down Cafe is a hoot! Nice shops with great... More

I too went for MISA (the arts school) and commuted daily with car from Bayfield. With windows rolled down only got splashed twice -- very little chop. Miller's Coffee Shop for food and drink en route to school when forgot to pack them. Highlights of plein aire outings: sunset on the ferry dock, the marina, village views including the burnt... I took my six year old and nine year old girls to the Apostle Islands for a long weekend and they absolutely loved it. We stayed in Bayfield, but came to Madeline Island twice because they had such a great time! The shops are great to walk through and peruse. We stopped at a couple of the restaurants and had... We were on vacation and we took the ferry over for dinner and drinks. The ferry is clean and on time and we especially enjoyed the trip back to Bayfield at night. The lights from town and the summer wind. It was so peaceful. We had a perfect, romantic evening on the island starting at Tom's and ending with an... More

I love taking a trip to Madeline Island once every couple of years. We had a beautiful day for the Ferry Ride from Bayfield to Madeline Island. In 2016 the rates are: $13.50 per person RT (ages 12+), 7.00 RT for ages 6-11, vehicle $24.50 RT, bike $7.00, motorcycle $15.50 RT (RT = Round Trip). Madferry.com. Many people walk on... More
