The Aldo Leopold Shack and Farm is a National Historic Landmark. The Aldo Leopold Foundation manages the site and permits self-guided and guided visits. Visitors check in at the Leopold Center, headquarters of the Aldo Leopold Foundation and an interpretive center with displays on Leopold's life and legacy. The Leopold Center has been rated as one of the greenest buildings in the world, with Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council. Solar panels. geothermal systems, and extensive use of local materials make the building itself an interesting attraction as well.

We didn't really know what to expect but were interested to learn of this family's dedication to the land. Unfortunately, with the mosquitoes biting so badly during our visit, we couldn't really explore the surroundings.

As a person working in Environmental Education, this was a sort of pilgrimage for me. It was inspiring to know that I stood where Aldo Leopold once sat and wrote A Sand County Almanac. Well worth the trip. Bring bug spray!

Beautiful day and wonderful place for field trip. Attended as part of a conference. I want to bring my family back. Great to learn about the legacy of Leopold and that the work is continuing. It's worth the trek!

I gave this 5 stars for Sand County Almanac fans. Aldo Leopold was the premier conservationist of the 20th century, and that book is the BEST nature writing ever. If you are not a fan, it's worth the trip to the center to find out...More

This is a great attraction if you are tired of water slides and t-shirt shops. Very historic, on the beautiful Wisconsin River. Lots of good information from the staff. Something the kids can write about in the What Did I Do This Summer, when they...More
