The most beautiful cave in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest, Cave of the Mounds lies just off U.S. Highways 18/151 in Blue Mounds, WI. The United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service designated Cave of the Mounds a National Natural Landmark because the site possesses "exceptional value as an illustration of the nation's natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of man's environment". Curious tourists and budding cave enthusiasts have been enjoying an introduction to caving in the midwest for years while visiting Cave of the Mounds. Commonly referred to as the "jewel box" of America's major caves for the variety and delicacy of its formations, Cave of the Mounds is recognized by the Chicago Academy of Sciences as "the significant cave of the upper Midwest".

Truly awesome. Astonishing beauty. The cave is beautifully lit. The tour proceeds like a musical score, with tight spots and twisting paths that open into soaring, cathedral-like spaces. The tour guides seem to love being there, and who wouldn't?

If you are new to caverns, then this is something that would be a good start. Our guide was very knowledgeable. It's really amazing to learn about how the owners tried to save this geological monument. Although am not disappointed with the place, overall I would give it a three point five star rating.

Our family of 4 took the tour and really liked it! The tour guide was well-informed and personable. The caves were very interesting and everything was very well-maintained. The extras (gem sluicing, fossil digging) were a hit with our kids too. Tour tickets were a little pricey, but overall it was a fun way to spend an afternoon.

We visited with our family of 4 and thoroughly enjoyed the tour! A very impressive cave tour definitely suitable for smaller kids and up. Lots of interesting things to see, kids were enthralled the whole time. Abe was our tour guide and did a terrific job! The total darkness things is super cool too!!

Last year we took a tour of the cave and loved it! You watch a short educational video and then head down into the cave to learn about its history and formations. It really is a spectacular place to witness, though probably not for the very claustrophobic (most of it is pretty open, but it is underground). They also have... More

$18.00 for an hour or so tour. I like caves but I have seen better than this one. The tour guide was not very knowledgeable. It is probably a better experience for children.

We took a tour with 4 adults and a 3, 4, and 5 year old. It was a great experience. Our tour guide was great. Then we bought the bags so the kids could go outside and filter water through their sand to find their gems. They loved it. So did I. Brought back memories from my childhood.

This is not a large cave, but it is beautiful. You also are up close and personal within the cave walls. Our guide was very informative, our group small, and this made for a very good tour. This place is easy to get to from RTE 151, so stop for a visit. You do need to be able to walk... More

Never knew Wisconsin had any caves, and how amazing and lucky for all of us how they found it, by accident !!! It is amazing what time, minerals and water can do to rock, worth the $20 to see!! Nice area for the kids to pan for gold and dig for gems and precious stones!!
