Several attractive campsites at "Indian Mounds" site
Sep 2019
I was visiting Minocqua, Wis. and I spent some time exploring the area looking for good campsites or other places to stay. This campground, called "Indian Mounds", of this state forest has several good campsites just 20 yards uphill from Tomahawk Lake, which is East of Hazelhurst. I did not stay to camp there yet, but the camping sites look like great spots (primitive camping, I didn't see any electrical or other hookups). The campsites are each surrounded by woods so you are out of strong winds, yet the Lake is close-by if you bring kites, canoes, kayaks, SUP, or fishing gear. There are several hillocks in the area all quite overgrown by trees. I presume those are the Indian mounds, but I didn't find any signs labeling them.

Simply beautiful
Jul 2019 • Friends
Spacious and healthy forest with bike trails and hiking. Gorgeous selection of campgrounds but they are primitive. No electricity, water or sewer. Worth the trade off though.

Quiet and lovely
Aug 2018
Great spot, even though we weren't on the lake. Not too noisy. Plenty of trees to string a clothesline and sturdy fire pits. Not as close to the best trails, perhaps, but we enjoyed hiking Raven Woods. We also had a great time paddling small and quiet Hemlock Lake but also loud and busy Clear Lake! There's also a WalMart nearby if you're like us a forgot about a hundred things.

Great summer camping spot
Jul 2017 • Couples
If you like to camp and bike, this place is for you. The bike trail in the area has over 50 miles, connecting Boulder Junction with Manitowish Waters & Mercer (west) and Sayner and St. Germain (south). The Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail is fully paved and appropriate for all types of bicycles. There are hundreds of camping spots to choose from on several beautiful lakes. A great summer get-away spot.

Sad but true!
Nov 2017 • Couples
Formerly a great forest resource with hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, hiking and biking. Recently State authorities authorized a program to add hundreds of miles of ATV trails to the forest. Kiss the sylvan quiet goodby. Also bicycle culture and ATV cultures are incompatible. If there are many ATVs the Bikers will stop coming. Local business who have been gleefully looking forward to increased sales will find they'll have substantially reduced bike income.

great campsites, can reserve 11 months in advance, right on the water, none of the campsites have hookups, so charge your batteries as they are strict on generators. great place for kids with the nice beach, lots of fishing going on, must be something in that lake

Pristine Campgrounds
Jun 2017 • Family
A clean pristine campground with access to firewood, flushing toilets and showers. The park is well maintained and a great place for families with children. The lakes are clean, prepare for a great fishing experience including visiting nearby lakes. A gem in the Northern Woods.

I believe this is one of the most beautiful places in Wisconsin. The staff is always extremely friendly and the campground is spacious. This trip we have enjoyed the beach (although the water is so high that it has taken over all of the sand), kayaking and exploring.

Rustic Camping on Beautiful North Trout Lake
Oct 2015 • Couples
This campground is amazing. It is part of the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest in northern Wisconsin. It has 48 sites with double sites, tent walk in only and RV sites. Many are right on the lake front. There are 3 hand pumps for water and 3 toilet facilities. The beach is beautiful and the nature trail is a wonderful walking and hiking experience.
The Boulder Junction Bike Trail connects to this campground for lots of wooded biking on paved trails.
