Crex meadows has some serious history, back in the 20's they cut the tall grasses to make carpet, But you get back into some of the areas and you feel very remote. I would like to get back there and explore via the atv trails

Great place for birding. Varied habitat lends itself to a large variety of species. The website has a map of the property with interesting information about each area. Wish that was available in print form at the visitor center. I will definitely return!

Observed the sandhill cranes coming into the refuge last night about 45 minutes before sunset. Wonderful experience. Also observed many deer in the area. I recommend you see the sandhills at least once in your lifetime.

This is free to visit. Their visitor center has a nice display where you walk through to learn about the history of Crex Meadows. It's very well done & educational!

Perfect scenery and great for going outdoors. I think that every child should have an experience here, they teach gun safety and even have a cool survival camp class with Kristi

First visit to Crex. We had a great time just wandering around the hiking trails. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Small gift shop and also a little free library.

I was shocked to learn during my visit in March that dogs are allowed off leash until April 15th... Not sure what the start date is. Mostly the "busy" spring and summer season is when they have to be on leash.
