Horse paths and hiking trails. Also, picnic tables at the knoll. Very interesting terrain overall. Somewhat hilly.

Favorite place for winter hiking!
Jan 2019 • Family
We love to explore Donald Park all during the year but the winter is incredible here. Great trails with a variety of terrain. Fresh water spring runs throughout the winter for good background sounds and curious dog explorations.

This is a great hiking park. I think horses are allowed too. If you want to see south west WI outdoors, this is the place.

Great place to walk in an oak savanna

This is a great county park. Always fun to walk alongside the small streams that feed the Sugar River. Nice change of vegetation, from woods to grassy areas that you can explore, take a walk and do some bird watching. I encourage you to check out this gem.

We have driven by here several times and didn't realize what a nice park it is! The trails are well cared for and you can take a short or long hike if you want.

Hidden Jem near Madison
May 2017 • Friends
I have heard so much about this county park in the last few years and finally made it out for a hike in May. It's about a half hour from central Madison. I met a friend early on a weekend morning, we were the first ones in the parking lot at Pop's Knoll. Pop's Knoll has a nice shelter with picnic tables, grills, and bathrooms.

We hiked along Mt Vernon Creek and checked out The Big Spring, a beautiful spring with a viewing platform. It was so relaxing to watch the water bubble up in the crystal clear water surrounded by the bright green aquatic vegetation. We then walked to the Mt Vernon overlook, a cool rock exposure overlooking the small town of Mt Vernon. We then hiked through the Pine Grove to Larson's Pond. I saw a lot of bluebirds and warblers in the meadow around the pond so will add this park to my list of good bird watching areas near Madison.

I really enjoyed the park and will definitely return for bird watching, wildflowers, and general outdoor exercise in the future.

PS- many of the trails are multi-use and shared with horses, I enjoyed meeting the few riders along the trails.

Nice park

I really like this park. For one, a lot of people don't know it so there isn't many people there. Another thing is that it has wetlands and woods. You get to see a lot of birds. You do need a state sticker to go here. I think of this place as a hidden gem.

Take a Hike Near Madison
Mar 2017 • Friends
Well, I guess it's unanimous. Donald County Park (should we now call it "The Donald?") is one of the best places to hike in the Dane County and Madison area. I had my introduction on a mild March Sunday, when the flora and fauna was not even at its best. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of topography and terrain, the bodies of water flowing through, and especially the natural spring, which at this early stage, boasted a growth of fresh watercress on top. Made me wish I'd brought along my salad spinner on the hike. By the way, I enjoyed this hike courtesy of the Madison Area Outdoor Group, who facilitates many hikes in the area throughout the year. We spent about 2 hours crossing hill and dale, and making a couple of stops to view and old early settler homestead, the natural spring, and some cranes circling above us trying to find a good air current. I can only imagine how much more pleasant this park is as spring and summer approach. It's just about a 20 minute drive from Madison and a few miles south of Mt. Horeb. Scenic and convenient.

Wonderful!
May 2016 • Friends
We went hiking here with the RPCV's of Wisconsin- Madison. It was our groups first hike of the season and we enjoyed the groomed trails, wildlife, and all the plants coming into bloom. We even witnessed a crane dance in a nearby field. There was plenty of free parking! The only criticism we have is that the numbering on the map at the entrance does not match the numbering on the map online, we may have lost one of our friends for an hour or two, but we luckily, eventually found them.
