    Not to be missed!
This is a “must do” when in Cody. The drive from Cody to the dam is a short 6 miles from downtown. The sunlight on the water makes for lovely greens and blues. Buffalo Bill State Park is right there as well, so it’s a great spot for a picnic lunch. The entire area is a beautiful drive from Cody to the East entrance to Yellowstone NP.

A must see when in Cody WY
We came to Cody with the intent of visiting Yellowstone. With rain in the forecast we decided to find interesting things to see and do in Cody with your dog in tow. The drive to the visitor center of the dam is spectacular with tunnels cut through the rocks which was quite the engineering phenomenon. There’s a 4 mile round trip paved hiking trail about a mile east of the dam via the Hayden Arch Bridge. It was such a beautiful walk along the river of a pretty spectacular canyon of breathtaking rock formations.

    Totally unexpected. Breathtaking
Went because of a recommendation, didn’t expect to see this. What a structure and what a view. Massive lake ina canyon but the breathtaking bit was walking over the dam and looking down! Real butterflies in stomach moment.

This is a good tourist stop to see how a dam works to provide power and irrigation to the area. During our stop, the lake was completely full and overflowing the spillway. This is a very scenic area and the educational materials posted are excellent.

Buffalo Bill Dam is a great place for kids! It’s free, there’s a golf cart shuttle, it’s educational and a great achievement for it’s time. The dam was built in 1910 and was the tallest in the world at that time. It towers over the Shoshone river. The educational movie inside is worth the time. It’ll give you a great sense of the sacrifice that it took to build it.

A great place to stop, between Cody and Yellowstone's east entrance.
The Visitor's Center is well-maintained and nicely conceived; with a wealth of information, and a friendly and accommodating staff. The short film gives an excellent overview and background of the damn.
One can also enjoy some wonderful views of this magnificent construction; which provides the lifeblood of Cody and its surroundings.
Well worth the time.

Beautiful area and drive. On the way to the Yellowstone East Entrance. The reason I gave it a 3 star rating is I wish this would have earlier hours. Sadly, we were put early to Yellowstone to beat the crowds, which was fantastic, but also meant not be able to have access to the dam visitor center. You can still pull in the lot and see the dam from the other side, but I don't think it's the same. There is information in the parking and a giant plug, which is informative. Maybe in the future, the hours can adjust to be more in sink with other tourism.

This was a great stop and very interesting. Unfortuently for us, the winds were crazy so it made it a hard time to enjoy time on the dam. The information center was great and had beautiful views. You can walk on the dam and enjoy that too.

It is amazing that the dam ever was completed. God bless those men who worked on it. The view of the water from the dam is breathtaking. Be sure to watch the movie, it gives a great history of how the dam was built, with blood, sweat and tears.

Wild (Buffalo) Bill Cody acquired water rights to Shoshone water. He was instrumental in the construction of a canal through the Bureau of Reclamation. The dam was a diversion of water completed in 1910---319 ft. We walked to the visitor's center and overlooked the dam. Pretty reflections off the canal sides.

It is all free. You can the history of the dam and buy souvenirs. A beautiful drive just minutes outside of Cody. There are some of the best dam drivers in golf carts ready to shuttle you to the front door from the parking lot. Fun and scenic. A must do.

Accidentally found the Buffalo Bill reservoir and dam while exploring Cody WY - lovely! Very interesting exhibit and you can walk across the top of the dam for beautiful views. This dam was one of the tallest when it was built. Glad we stumbled upon it!
