Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the second time we have done this beautiful drive. Make sure to enjoy the pullouts.

The drive from the south goes through nice grassy fields that make me think of Ireland. You can see Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Towards the top you are more in forest going past horse ranches then start dropping down to Hawi.

Hwy 250 - Kohala Mountain Road. We made this drive a couple of times during our visit to the Big Island. The first time we drove from Hawi to Waimea, on our way to Hilo. It has an unexpected loveliness - so lush and green. We enjoyed it again the 2nd time when we were re-routed by the police, due to fires along the Akoni Pule Hwy.

Take your time to enjoy the ride. Folks at the end of the road will direct you to roadside parking and give information about the valley. It's a steep hike down. Take water, use a stick. Enjoy a refreshment on weekends at the roadside stand. Picnic and watch the surfers at Keokea Park from the elevated shelter.

Pleasant, scenic drive from the Wiamea area over the mountain to Hawi, or the reverse, if you have driven north along the 270 to Hawi, Kapa'au and Pololu. Some spots to stop and take photos south toward Mauna Kea and Hapuna resorts. Windy roads, so take your time.

What a lovely drive through acres upon acres of lush green pasture land. Saw lots of cattle. The Big Island is a land of diversity from lava fields to sandy beaches to lush countryside. It was a peaceful drive with quite the elevation gain.

We drove this loop road which included the town of Hawi which was adorable. Through ranches and low lying mountains. The drive to the northern part of the island is a bot long but enjoyable.

We used a driving app to drive around the island and it took us on this road which was beautiful. Amazing how the weather changes from one place to another. You'll enjoy the ride.

Diverse landscapes from the coastal view from Hawi across the grasslands, ranch lands to the little town of Waimea. Just beautiful being able to view the island across the vast vistas. One of our favorites drives. Highly recommended for sure.

I'm afraid of heights, so while I appreciate the amazing beauty of this road, I deeply wish we had come back down the coast road instead. I was white-knuckling against the door frame as my husband navigated down this road. Which is in actuality a perfectly fine two-lane country highway, it's not a donkey track or anything. But you have a SWEEPING view as the land falls away toward the sea, with plenty of scope for the imagination.

drove it at night first, kind of nervous wondering if there were deathly drops on the side of the road (no). winding 2 lane. Actually very lightly traveled, and during the day - wow - great views. Kohala is one of the inactive volcanoes on Hawaii. ON a clear day you can get great views of Mauna Kea, Loa, and even Maui. No services. terminates in Kohala on one side and Waimea on the other.
