Throughout history, mankind has dreamed of a worldly paradise of unearthly beauty. Names differ: the Fortunate Isles, the Garden of Eden, Shangri-La. On a sunny day, Akaka Falls State Park is about as close as I expect to ever get to an earthly paradise. Most reviewers are enthusiastic about this attraction, and I agree, but I think it applies to... More

Went here with my parents and my 4 yo boy. The paved path was in excellent condition to see both the Kahuna falls and the Akaka falls. It was $1USD for the adults, and was worth every cent!

We drove 1.5 hours to arrive at this amazing destination. The park is well set up with a circular route to follow. This route takes you through the most amazing scenery. It is a valley through which you descend by a path that breaks out into steps. You are surrounded by walls of green leaves, trees and some flowers. You see... More

After going on a nearby Zipline we decided to visit the Akaka Falls. It's a self guided walkabout with paved walk ways and some steps. It seems to have been neglected in the sense that the underbrush is starting to become overgrown, which reduces the view from the walkway. It's not bad if you are in the area but I... More

Akaka Falls is absolutely breathtaking! It's over 2,000 foot drop is the longest in the world! Niagara Falls, to compare, is 167 foot drop, although it's much wider, of course. The beautiful story of the falls makes it even more magical--a must-see in the Hilo area! It does require a lot of walking, some of which is fairly steep.

A short walk to the viewing spot and you are blown away by the shear height of the water fall. At over 400 feet tall this is the tallest water fall we have ever seen. The short walk to the water fall also has lots of native plants and smaller water falls that are great for photos.

Definitely worth the trip. Close to Hilo, a nice and easy walk (make sure you take the loop and see both waterfalls), and you can stand and enjoy the majestic scene for as long as you want. Parking lot is small, but you can still park just outside and walk in... although they still ding you for $2/person. Not a... More

The hike is a lot of steps up but well worth it. Absolutely spectacular view and the falls were unbelievable.

Try and go on a sunny day in order to see a rainbow. If it's not sunny it's still good to see. Some folks hiked over to the edge of the falls. Don't do that!!
