Our friends had been here and wanted to share it with us. We are so thankful that they did! It was so interesting and was a great few hours before heading to Hilo, airport.

Museum is located about 6 blocks inland from the harbor. Exhibits on the first floor deal with the natural history of the Hawaiian Islands while the second floor discusses the cultural heritage of the Hawaiian Islanders. You can also take a guided tour (included in the admittance price) of the first home/office of Christian missionaries on the island. Each of... More

Good historical site to visit. Interesting how the house was once cut in 1/2 in order to be moved and saved. Tours allow for only a small number of people so go early to ensure you have a spot. The gem exhibit is of world quality.

It is difficult to think of anything having to do with missionaries in Hawaii without remembering the damage they did to the culture and how their progeny helped steal the crown lands and overthrow the monarchy. Nevertheless, a visit to the Lyman Museum will remain of interest to the intrepid traveller. The Lyman Museum and Mission House has collections of... More

There are many interesting artifacts that are well organized. The tour of the Lyman House next door featured furniture made of koa wood by the school boys and other household items. If you have any interest in Hawaii history, I recommend it. Even if you are not that interested in history, the nature displays and rock collection might be of... More

This Museum located just above old down town Hilo has lots to offer to visitors and locals alike. Their mineral and shell collection is fantastic. I also like the display on our extinct flightless birds. Upstairs is the Hawaiian section with nice artifacts and even some modern/recent Hawaii things from plantation days. I think everyone will love this place where... More

Loved this museum and tour. The main floor is geology and the upper floor is cultural history. There are several films, we watched the lava flow that destroyed Kalapana. The films are about 40 - 50 minutes. So glad we did the docent tour of the Lyman House. He was so knowledgeable and dedicated to the history of the Big Island... More
