The waves were wild the day we visited, so swimming was not in the cards, but we were lucky enough to be able to see a turtle resting on the sand. It was so sad however to see people going much to close to the turtle. There are lots of fish in the pools as well. There are facilities at... More

A great place to see big sea turtles resting on the top of lava rocks. Some others are resting in the rock pools. They are amazing. The old and small black sand beach is also a place to do snorkeling and swimming activities. The view is so beautiful. Open shower area, bathrooms, picnic tables are available.

Quick stop as part of a day trip form Honolulu. Saw sea turtles resting in a tide pool, loved watching the waves crash in, and loved the black sand, so unusual!

The sea was quite rough and there were turtles sheltering in one of the rock pools. The little black sand beach and protected swimming area looked good although we didn't go in the water.

Richardson Beach Park is right along coast of bay in Hilo, little weird getting to it thru industrial park but when we arrived found parking on street since Park parking lot was full. We grabbed our chairs, towels & drinks to head into park to go swimming or snorkeling. Very busy with locals mostly families, several pavilions had parties, changing... More

The view is cool and the waves hitting in the distance is fun to watch. A good place for a picnic but not ideal for swimming.

The best tide pools to see and so full nature! Loved seeing all the sea turtles resting, loved seeing the lava tide pools. Wear shoes.

Well, you don't really go to Hilo for the beaches. That's what the Kailua-Kona coast is for. But, having said that, Richardson's is about as good as it gets in Hilo. The beach has free parking, although not much of it. There are some picnic tables, bathrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on duty when the park is open from 7AM... More

We went to Richardson Beach to do some snorkeling before we did some more exploring on the Hilo side of Hawaii. It was a nice little local beach. It was pretty rainy as it usually is in Hilo and there were a fair amount of people swimming and surfing at the beach. There are picnic tables and bathrooms. This is... More

This was a pretty and well maintained Park on the edge of the town of Hilo and a surprise as we did not expect this type of structured garden. The beach is black sand but it is a pleasant place to walk around. There was ample parking the day we were there..
