It's a 4 mile jaunt off of the main road that is extremely nice to drive! It doesn't take much time (unless you get out and walk a bit which I would highly advise!) and doesn't cost a thing. Definitely worth taking the road less...More

The highlight of this drive is Onomea Bay. There are some trails leading out to the peninsula there, and the plant life is well worth a look.

Pepe'ekeo Onomea Drive was just an incredible twisty road with a crown of trees that accompanied our journey for a while. Slow down and enjoy, remember, always drive with Aloha.

I have NEVER seen the botanical gardens' parking lot full let alone overflowing. It was amazing and really great to see. Onomea Bay is still a great sight and the drive is so peaceful.

A narrow road full of tropical foliage. Very close to the tropical gardens is a pull off (ocean side) and you can take a short hike down to Onomea bay.

This was very colorful and scenic - just like what Old Hawaii may have been like. This is fun and quaint.

I have had the pleasure of traveling this road many times. It always amazes me to it beauty. And the views of the shores are to say the least breathtaking.

Assuming you are referring to the docking of a cruise ship and further that the cruise ship docks in Hilo, that would be the only logical place to rent a car. From there it is not far to the scenic drive. Maybe 20 minutes.
