Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We thought this would be more than it was, but the only interesting item was the statue of the King. Otherwise, a lackluster park, a few bridges, lots of green grass, and not much else.

A beautiful park not living up to its potential. A result of bad management- they even foolishly defaced their own responsibility- painted the trees. Other criminal activity not controlled well.

Nice place to visit and relax in Hilo. Only problem is mosquitos. Bring your mosquito repellent because they love visitor's blood better than the locals'.

Every visit to Hilo isn't complete without a stop to the King Kamehameha statue, just to be polite & ask his blessing for landing on his island. The rest of the park is beautiful with some very unique bridges, There's always some Ducks & Nene around, always nice watch them

This is a very nice park, full of bridges and beautiful trees, and very scenic. It also has one of Hawaii's four King Kamehameha statues which is definitely worth seeing. However, there is little to do in this park for more than an hour.

Beautiful park with huge green lawns and room to run. Coconut palms sway gracefully beside the river, memorials offer places for focused meditation while quiet greenspaces offer opportunities to commune with nature. Pavilions for events. Lots of parking. Clean.

This is a large park that has multiple picnic areas, BBQ grills, covered areas, restrooms, fishing area and several historical memorials.

We were disappointed this time as the arched bridges were all closed to walking, but you can see muscovy ducks, Guinea fowl, feral chickens and feral cats.

Walking from downtown Hilo across the vast greenness of the Wailoa River State Park overlooking Hilo Bay. We spotted King Kamehameha Statue in the distance across the parkland, made of Red bronze, standing 18 feet to the spear tip statue, on a lava rock plinth, wearing a gold leaf, sash, belt, loincloth, a long sweeping golden cloak and helmet. At his feet were fresh fruit offerings and a Hawaiian nationalist protest sign.
With its easy axes and handicap ramp it is a very popular stopping point for cruise ship passengers tour buses, There are two information boards one about Kamehameha history and the other is map of old Hilo bay in the times of King Kamehameha.
In 1963 the Princeville Corporation commissioned this statue to be sculpted by R. Sandrin in Italy, for thier resort on Kauai. Unfortunately, the local population did not like the Statue so it was moved to its present location here in Wailoa River State Park Hilo in 1997. Since then the statue and the park have twice been hit by monster tsunamis. The surrounding park has green pleasant well-manicured grass areas, with groups of trees and the odd bridge. Alongside the park’s roadways are white painted stones, to help you navigate at night? or keep of the grass?
TIP: If you miss this one there are actually four of these statues, the other three are on Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, in downtown Honolulu on the island of Oahu, and in Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.

We booked a trip on the river boat (Smith Family); it was so much fun. This is a good activity for a family with kids. Some hiking up to the fern grotto so anyone with limited mobility might be unhappy.
