In case you are following google maps instructions: please do not. You will save a lot of time going through forest and overgrown road for miles and at the end you will see fence with private property that is not possible to go through. Ask people around for reccomendation.

The falls at the end of Waipio Valley are almost 1200 feet tall, making them one of the tallest (if not the tallest) waterfalls I've ever seen in person. You can't get too close due to the private property in the valley, but the view is so good that you won't mind too much.

This waterfall can be seen at the Waipio Valley Lookout or if you have a 4WD vehicle you can drive down to the Hiilawe Falls to get a closer look and there are also tours that you can sign up for to explore this gorgeous area.

It's a must see ,photos from the top are great but once your walking on the black sandy beach .WOW , the drive down is like The Indiana Jones ride at Disney Land on steroids .

The hike to the waterfalls crosses private property. And a hiker lost her life in December 2014 while hiking up. We just saw the waterfalls at the distance, from the road. They are magnificent.

I don't know if I could hike all the way from the lookout.......I'm older. We got a ride to the turnoff. Highly recommend the 1/4 mile hike in. We saw horses on the way. Thousands of birds. Jungle.

We visited last March 2014. We were on our way to take a horseback ride in the valley and in the van we stopped to look at the falls. Had to travel down Waipio Road which lots of people who were driving it had a 4 wheeler, jeep or 4x4. We also walked all the way down to the black... More

We were a bit unnerved by some of the guidebooks explanations that this is sacred ground and post phony signs to keep tourists out- I'm glad we went anyways! We had a AWD vehicle but were nervous about taking it down (signs posted indicating AWD not allowed down waiipo valley)- took us 4hrs round trip to hike down, to falls,... More

We are in drought and the falls have not been as active in 2013. And they are stunning, I think the tallest free falling falls in Hawaii.
