    Kula Kai Lava Tubes
I had a great time here solo, there was 6 of us. Gary who answered the phone, was very passionate about these lava tubes. My guide was funny and knowledgeable. I took the hour tour, was easy, couple steps, and a short ladder. I will be back in a few days to take the second tour of 2 hours since I wanted to continue!

Great tour, great guide! Highly recommend!
The tour was so amazing! Mo gave us lots of background info to help us understand the geology and history of the area before taking us into the cave to explore. Highly recommend this tour when you are visiting the Big Island!

    Fantastic Lave Tube Tour!
We did the 2 hour tour and I'm so glad we did more than just the Lighted Tour! Brian was a fantastic guide, very funny and knowledgeable of the tubes. He answered any and all questions and provided a lot of great information during the tour. Would highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to get a deeper experience on the lava tubes and is physically able!

    Excellent tour!
Definitely one of the best activities we’ve booked here in Hawaii. Our guide, Mo, was very knowledgeable and we learned more than we expected. We booked the one hour tour which was actually longer after reviewing the topography map before the actual cave tour.

Wow!!! The best way to learn about volcanoes on Big Island!!
Me and my 11 year old son did the 2 hour tour, which ended up lasting nearly 3 hours. The first 30 minutes was above ground explanation and review of the volcanolgy of Hawaii detailing the various lava flows over time and how that shaped the island. For me it was a great overview about the various volcanos of the Big Island. There is an amazing geologic map of the various lava flows that was fascinating. Then the underground tour, the bulk of your time. Unlike prior cave tours I’ve done (and not really enjoyed), this one was not smelly and claustrophobic. This was an extensive exploration of the lava tube system under south Kona. This was a science based tour exploring the volcanology, geology, archeology, and biology of the lava tube system. Our tour guide Moe is clearly a lava tube enthusiast and took joy sharing all he knows about the lava tubes with us. This is a great tour for anyone that enjoys science and learning. The 2 hour tour is fabulous if you love science. If you have kids with shorter attention spans then do one of the shorter tours. My 11 year old remained engaged the entire 2+ hours but all kids may not. My kid was so stoked after this tour! We HIGHLY recommend for an educational break from the hot windy beaches, esp if you’re traveling from Kona to Volcanoes National Park.

    Spectacular!
Mo, our excellent guide walked (and crawled) our way through the geology, anthropology, and history of the lava tubes with exceptional skill and knowledge (and humor), and with a delight born of his own evident curiosity. On an island with no shortage of spectacles, this was our family’s most memorable experience. Don’t skimp—take the “Two Hour” tour, if able (and plan for three). You’ll not regret it. Perfect.

A must see in Hawaii. Tour guide Brian and staff were full of information about the islands and formation of the islands. Worth the drive.

We were expecting a fun experience from the description on TripAdvisor, but this tour far exceeded our expectations -- it ended up being one of the favorite things we did on this trip to the Big Island! Kula Kai Caverns is one of the largest lava tube systems in the world. We booked the 2 hour tour and ended up spending about 3.5 hours with our amazing tour guide, Mo. Mo is very passionate about this cave system and his enthusiasm shows during the tour! For the first hour we walked on "paved" trails, where a wooden path is built on top of the lava rock. We were able to learn a lot of the basics of lava tubes and see a few different types of formations ("cave bacon" and "cave chocolate" were fun finds). We tried some water filtered through lava rock and climbed a ladder to get to a portion of the caves set up to look like active lava flow off in the distance. The real fun started in the second half of the tour. Those of us who were staying on the tour had been outfitted with kneepads, a helmet, and gloves. We left the "paved" portion of the caves and walked directly on top of the lava rock to explore the rest of the cave. Lava rock is sharp, so wear some old shoes with ankle support that you don't mind getting ripped up. Mo showed us around the caves, sharing more information as we walked. It was an amazing experience walking through the caves and learning about the unique ecosystem that exists inside of them. Near the end of the tour there is a 25 ft area in which you need to crawl to get through. The ceiling was about 3 feet tall in this area, so I would not recommend it for anyone with claustrophobia. Mo took a photo of each group crawling through the caves and then led us through an anthropological site near the exit where native Hawaiians once camped. After two hours, the cave exit is across the street from the entrance, so it works really well as a looped tour! It is hard to describe how cool this whole tour was. The size of the caves and the power of lava to create them was overwhelming. There were so many beautiful things to look at as well. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in experiencing lava tubes.

Our group of three adults and one teenager loved our hour-long tour of the Kula Kai caverns. The tour is set in a private neighborhood that contains giant lava tubes. We were guided underground into this hollowed-out area that stretched on for quiet a walk. Our guide offered tons of details on the formation of these unique features along with all sorts of other details about how lava is still forming the Big Island.

While Volcano National Park offers a short walk in a lava tube -- which I also recommend -- this guided tour is longer and filled with all sort of interest nuggets about volcanoes and lava.

My husband and I booked the two hour lava tube tour during our honeymoon this December. You spend the tour learning about the lava tubes, walking over crumbly lava rocks, and there is one crawl on hands and knees (knee pads and gloves provided).

Our guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable and clearly passionate about all things lava tube and cave, sharing his extensive background and several informative lessons about local geology and geography. He also didn't go more than 2 minutes without cracking a silly, fun joke! He had the personality one would want from a tour guide; a perfect balance of being both knowledgeable and entertaining. He also offered to be photographer using my phone for numerous photo opportunities, and was skilled at that as well! We would definitely book another tour with him in the future upon our return!
