Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The visitor center is still closed but we stopped at the steam vents and walked in to the edge of the caldera. What a view! The steam vents are lively and the ones closest to the parking lot are quite warm. But, when you look around you see steam everywhere. It is a great place to walk and the walk is easy. Handicap parking up front by the large vents. Walking to the caldera is a bit tough for those whith physical handicaps but it's not far and fairly flat. Incredible views and incredible geology in this area.

This was pretty cool to see since we were already there, but I wouldnt make a special trip for it. The walk from the parking lot to the steam is pretty short and easy for people with mobility challenges to maneuver. It's cool to see the steam that the earth is producing, but there is a lot of sulfur in the area so you don't want to be breathing in the steam for too long, especially if you have any respiratory issues.

There's parking and easy access to view the large steam vents. Great for those who are short on time or who have mobility issues. If you want more than that, walk along the trail to view other, smaller, steam vents. We thought they were pretty cool and the path was easy to follow and had a fun, tropical feel. One of the best short hikes in the park.

The Steam Vent field is located close to the National Park visitor center and some vents are right at the parking lot. A short walk from the parking lot takes you to Wahinekapu (Steaming Bluff). From Wahinekapu you can get a nice view of Kilauea caldera.
This phenomenon is created when rainwater seeps into the cracks in the rocks and reaches rock that is heated from the magma below. The heated water returns to the surface and condenses as steam.

Not something you see often we stopped along the road to watch the steam rising. Guess it is an indicator that the volcano is still active.

The walk destinations apparently vary depending on who is leading them but ours took us out to the steam vents. This was in the evening just before dark. Saw lots of steam and lots of vents. Kind of eerie and really interesting.

Changes have made this park a disappointment from what it once was. The Jagger Museum is closed and that was the best spot for viewing the volcano at night, which now probably does not have the red glow with the changes from the eruption.

We first stopped at these steam vents and were amused by the coins and even dollar bills people had thrown in! Even cigarette butts were contributed! (Couldn't believe people would do that!) The heat and smell weren't bad -- interesting, really. But we realized there was a walkway over to the edge of the crater which was the REAL attraction. I had never seen anything like it! A huge expanse of lavaflow, with the volcano caldera in the distance. That sight made us look forward to continuing the journey.

I would recommend skipping these. The tour buses offload crowds of people here, and you can see some unobstructed steam vents along the sulfur and other trails.

We loved these and it only takes 30 minutes to see them. You can walk right up to some of the vents and be bathed in steam coming right out of the volcano! I wish we had taken the Sulphur Banks Trail too, but we were too tired from hiking the Kilauea Iki Trail!

Can you still soak in a hot tub next to the steam vents outside of Pahoa on the road to Kalapana?
Written 10 September 2018
No. The lava covered everything in and around Kapoho, Champagne Ponds and the Red Road from the 4 corners stop sign all the way to McKenzie State Park. :(
