Took the Lava Boat tour offered by Kalapana Cultural Tours. Ikika and Andrew were the guides, both grew up in the area. Both provided stories about the area, mainly the impact of volcanic activity on people's lives. They also told us about the myths and legends of the area, fulfilling the cultural part of their mandate. For the trip, guests... More

We rented bikes from this company and it was fast and easy! Only cost $44 for two people; made the 8 mile hike much easier as it looked painful to actually walk the whole thing. They supply you with everything you need including a small water bottle (but bring more, it's hot!). We rode our bikes to the seaside and... More

Before going with Kalapana Cultural Tours, we researched many companies. We finally went with KCT after being told by John at Dolphin Bay that they were the best. We went on the sunrise tour with Andrew and Captain Kai. We cannot urge you strongly enough to do the sunrise tour. Yes, it is worth waking up at 3 am and... More

This was a once in a lifetime look at volcanic lava entering the ocean. We took a 4:00 boat tour and totally enjoyed it. After about 40 minutes by high-speed boat (we stopped to watch dolphins play) we watched from about 30 yds away as molten lava poured into the sea and exploded upward. Our guide, Andrew, was very courteous... More

The tour is a top notch fun time for people in average to above average shape. You bike in 4.5 miles on a hard packed gravel lava road. Then you walk down lava rock to ocean to observe the lava entering the ocean. Its awesome you see chunks flying up and steam and red glow of lava. When we were... More

We took the five am boat tour to see the lava flow. We were lucky because the lava bench broke off (26 acres) and the tube became exposed. The captain was helpful and nice. He talked about the lava and how the Hawaiians viewed lava. On the way to the lava, the water was bioluminescent since it was still very... More

You can definitely do the trail without a guide but we loved our experience. Our tour guide was Trevor and he was a super chill guy who shared a lot of cool stories of the lava and the island. We got a lot of good information on the history and culture of Hawaii. He found us some great spots to... More
