This is a nice trip, which consists of waiting for the guide to arrive from the previous trip, a ride to the marina where you board the kayaks, a paddle along the river and then a walk along an extremely muddy as it turned out,...More
Me and my girlfriend loved this. Picked up from the pineapple shop and taken a 10 min drive to the river (Where the fern grotto river ride is).
Paired up and given your canoe and dry bag for your valuables. A short tuition and away...More
My wife and I enjoyed the stories from Brian, plus the bit of adventure provided by this trip. The kayaking was easy, hiking was muddy yet pleasant, and the waterfalls were beautiful. Not quite like doing the same on the mainland.
This was a really good excursion and it was nice to get out in the forest. Just make sure you are prepared for a lot of sun during the kayak part of the trip and a lot of mud during the hiking part of the...More
We really enjoyed our Duke's kayaking adventure. The river had beautiful views and you really felt like you were in the middle of nowhere during the adventure. The hike had some areas that were muddy and slippery, but overall the hike was easy and definitely...More
We booked Duke’s directly with the company. Brian was our guide and we couldn’t have been more pleased. He really took his time telling us stories along the way, he has a great sense of humor and he’s just a nice guy. We all seriously...More
On recommendation of friends we booked this excursion off a cruise, not realising we had to first get to the Waterfalls at Wailua, which we obtained by 25minute taxi trip. We arrived early expecting to have a coffee but local restaurant has gone out of...More
We have been in Kauai in September 18 for our honeymoon. Unfortunately we found that Na Pali Coast closed because of the flooded road so we decided to do kayak through the wailua River and we chosed this company and it we nailed it!!! Brian...More
We had a blast kayaking and hiking to the Secret Falls. We had many adventures in Kauai and this was one of our favorites. Brian was an outstanding guide. He was helpful and entertaining. Brian is just an all around nice guy, who clearly enjoys...More
Our guide Brian was a great "you can do this, just be careful" team leader with lots of stories (don't believe them all!) I'm 60 years old and not in the best shape but I'm not sore from the kayaking even though we had to...More

I'm thinking you could probably rent kayaks and do the river on your own. There is also the Wailua river where you can go kayaking, and if you can be there when the sea is calmer than on our last trip, there is always Napali and Poipu ocean kayaking!
The guide, however, took us to the waterfall, which you would probably never find on your own. We hiked quite a distance through the forest to get to that beautiful spot!
I don't remember what we paid for the half day with the guide, but I'm sure they have a website. Outfitters Kauai, and Boss Frogs rent various sports equipment. We have used them on several of the islands.

It is a lot of walking. The terrain is muddy and can be quite slippery. Parts of the trail are very narrow with drop-offs on the side. The pathway is both uphill and downhill at times. The kayaking part is strenuous as well. On the way back the wind blowing toward us increased the rowing effort needed. It is an adventure but I would advise if you are "very unfit" as you describe you might want to try a hike that is not quite as strenuous until you work your way up to going that distance.
