NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

As part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the McBryde Garden already has high credentials. But this isnʻt just another pretty, tropical garden. This is the primary place within the NTBG system for research, conservation and education. Here you can find rare plants, medicinal plants, endemic plants, plants that teach us about the Polynesians... all in a spectacular Eden-like park... More

The Botanical Gardens were under my "If time allows" section on my itinerary. If they are on the same section of yours - MOVE THIS TO MUST DO! This was an unplanned stop, as I was exploring the South side of the island, and kinda ran across the location. I didn't have reservations so wasn't sure if I could tour... More

Your 30 dollar fee is also a contribution to saving incredible endangered plants and the biodiversity of our world. The shuttle driver is extremely well informed and his talk is most enjoyable. The long walk through the garden is fantastic. Plants could use more informative placards, but overall plant lovers will soak it up.

We lucked into the guided tour. Paul took such good care of us. He made you feel the history of the property along with the beauty of the garden. Quite wonderful.

First, a word about the organization of the garden. When I first started visiting Kauai I was very confused about the differences between Allerton, McBryde and the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG), so I will take a moment to clarify it for other newcomers. The NTBG contains BOTH Allerton and McBryde (entrance is the same place, shuttle vans are the... More

We were hoping to visit the Allerton Garden, but when we arrived we found out that A) it could only be seen on a $60 guided tour - no self guided walk through allowed, and B) there were no guides available for a morning tour. The 12 noon tour would not be done in time for us to make it... More

We went on the McBryde Garden Self-Guided tour. The National Tropical Botanic Garden shuttle took us to the top of the hill explaining the landscape and the Gardens on the way. Next, we walked through various parts of the Garden following the driver’s instructions. We liked the “Canoe Plants” exhibit where various plants taken by the Polynesians in their canoes... More

I really enjoyed touring the gardens. The price seemed a bit steep but we really enjoyed every aspect of the gardens. We got caught in a downpour which just added to the beauty. If you have an interest in plants and native verses invasive species this is a must see. I learned so much and everything was beautiful. The garden... More
