NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Toured this garden and it was so beautiful, the tour guide was so informative and throughly explained every tree ,flower, and rooms that were created by the Alertons .it was a perfect day with a little wind which kept the mosquitoes away but they do provide repellent for a minimal fee. It was simply stunning with it s pretty little... More

We did the self guided tour. The garden is laid out in a quiet valley and contains different sections of vegetation types from original Hawaiian vegetation to plants imported by Samoan's and spices. In some sections the signage for the plants were hard to read.

Perfect way to celebrate Valentines with my husband. Gorgeous setting. Informative and entertaining guide. Highly recommend sunset dinner tour of Allerton gardens. Fun experience dining as the Allertons did on the actual plantation house. Amazing sights and sounds. Interesting to walk thru jurassic Park and pirates of the Caribbean filming sites.

Lovely garden. We took the combo tour and saw a bit of both the McBryde and Allenton gardens. Our tour guide was excellent and added to our experience. Friendly, helpful staff. If you are in the Poipu area, you must visit.

Sam was our guide. His knowledge of the flora and fauna were unbelievable (but not to much to be boring) His passion for the gardens was infectious. My Mother ,Sister and I would all revisit any chance we get and would recommend to all. It was a leisurely stroll and they accommodated a couple in wheelchairs with their own private... More

We decided to take this tour as an "alternate" activity. $50.00 per person for guided tour of Allerton garden. A guided tour is the best (and only) choice for this venue, but our guide could have been a bit more informed on the plants displayed. Too many times she said, "I'm not sure, I will have to look that one... More

Very nice site to walk around in. Good descriptions by flowers along Biodiversity trail. Took young kids and walked the Upper Native Plant Garden and Biodiversity Trail...Kids enjoyed it. Nice facilities and honor system for water and snacks.

John, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable! He had patient cadence with a few challenging personalities in our group. Interesting "rooms", foliage & fauna, fountains & sculptures & history!

My husband and I opted for the self-guided tour of McBryde gardens. We were able to explore the "Spotliight Plants" at our own pace. Ancient plants, plants on the edge of extinction, and the true Natives were not disappointing. I'm glad we took the time to smell the flowers, touch the trees, and commune with nature.

Bring your insect repellant if you are going to be wandering through the dense foliage along the 'spice trail' in McBryde gardens. It's a jungle out there. As you probably already know, this is part of the independently funded National Tropical Botanical Garden dedicated to preserving and propagating tropical plants from around the globe. The $20 admission fee for the... More
