Great colorful birds! I went with my adult daughter, and we saw plenty of great colorful birds. The drive up was beautiful, and it was a short quick hike, but definitely worth it. I bought the park pass online prior to going and that was a great option too. I wish we would’ve kept driving and gone up even further and done a couple more hikes, but we were trying to cram so much in into such a short time there.

We were happy to find this lovely trail through the forest and even happier to see endemic birds there! It's a bit cool in the deep shade so take a jacket.

The trail is easy and not too long. It's not for strollers or wheel chairs - you walk across fallen branches and up slight hills but it's not hard. Take water and wear sunscreen - even though it's cool the sun is bright in the open areas.

The campground at the beginning of the trail looks like a great place to camp. It's not very private but then again, you can make lots of new friends! There is a restroom by the parking area and there is water there to refill water bottles. It's free after you pay to get into the National Park.

Most visitors to Hawaii including Maui do not seem to pay much attention to weather. Yes the coast is usually warm and sunny but the moment you go up, whether it is on the Big Island or on Maui to visit Haleakala National Park, it can get cold. Hosmer Grove is at about 7000 ft elevation, just inside the entrance to the park, not as high as going all the way to the top. There is a small campground (not very private), but economical (free). There are pit toilets and an outside sink with running water. There are tables, one under a roof where you can have your picnic if it is lunch time. A trash can was also available.

The short nature trail starts in the parking lot, at first it goes through non-native vegetation (eucalyptus, pines etc. which are not native to Hawaii). Then the trail starts going through native short vegetation, many berries and if you are lucky nice flowers like the Ohi'a tree flower (red). The trail is not long (about half mile) or very difficult but it is best done on a sunny day. It can be cold and rainy here. This trail is famous among birders because of the native birds you can see here. Apapane, I'iwi, Maui Amakihi to name a few are easy to see if it is sunny and in the morning. We hiked 30 miles on the Big Island and we never saw the I'iwe. It is a beautiful bird found only in Hawaii. Before visiting the park it is a good idea to check the weather. If you really want to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the birds bring binoculars. They have free binoculars at the two lookouts (close together), but these were hard to focus well - at least for my eyes.

Aside from being a lovely place for a walk (a beautiful smelling eucalyptus forest giving way to native shrubs) this is an amazing place to view a range of beautiful endemic Hawaiian birds. We spent an hour here on a sunny morning (around 9am) and saw plenty of I'iwi, Apapane, Amakihi and Alauahio. Other non-native (but still lovely!) birds such as Nothern Cardinals and Japanese white-eye are also abundant. It really is a special place and a must stop for any bird lovers on their way to/ from Haleakala (you have to pay entry to the main park to gain access to the grove- turn almost immediately left after the rangers booth). It is sad to think these high forests, away from the threat of avian malaria are the last refuge of these gorgeous birds. Keep this in mind when you visit, and make sure you leave the grove exactly as you found it! Happy bird spotting!

Located just beyond the National Park entry gate, Hosmers Grove has both native and the surviving non-native plants which Mr. Hosmer attempted to grow here. Some grew well. Others didn’t. Many of the signs showing which trees were native and which were not were quite faded and difficult to read. We saw some birds -not a lot - including a bright red one with black on its wing. (Sorry, I didn’t write down the name.)
Got to love the rainbow eucalyptus tree which you can also see on the road to Hana.

After saluting the rising sun on Mt. Haleakala, any bird lover should stop by this grove on the downhill ride back to the beach. Almost all of Maui's indigenous birds can be spotted here without losing patience. We saw Red-crested Cardinal, Spotted Dove, and Tropical Java Finch within half an hour of our little stroll in the path. Free parking, a well maintained path, clearly marked plants and tale of birds living in the grove--really a fun little family or solo activity!

Easy hike and sharp left turn right after the park entrance takes you to Hosmers's Grove. Honey creepers (liwi) and other birdies were plenty, bring a long lens or binoculars to see them up close. Huge eucalyptus trees and good hike to start the day and before going up to the summit of Haleakalā!

This is a great alternative to camping on the beach. A reservation is needed for the sunrise at the summit on Haleakala. Instead we set up our tents at 4PM and headed up to the summit for sunset. It was awesome. Prepare for the cold temperatures. At 10,000 feet above sea level the temperature dropped to 39 with windchill. It was more comfortable at the campsite, 50s. There were about 10 campsites with grills. Pit bathrooms, smelly but convenient with running water.

We camped for one night here to hike the slide sand trail the next morning! There is everything what you need at this camping, potable water, toilets, parking lots, tables...! At night it’s so cold there so bring with you a battery heater or very thick blanket!

Hosmer Grove Trail is located inside Haleakala National Park. We took a hike through here and really enjoyed seeing the many different types of trees. We saw sandalwood, pine, eucalyptus, cedar, spruce, and Douglas fir trees. Lots of birds to see here, too.
