- Julie SEdmonds, Washington24 contributionsBeautiful! Come & See!As a gardener, I loved touring this family’s life’s work. I met the owner, who still works the garden at 90 years old, & had a delightful chat about the progression of the garden. It’s mammoth, & beautiful. You could stroll for hours appreciating the different garden rooms that have been created. It’s not perfect, like no garden is, but has diverse plants suited to their micro climate from all over the world. Lots of blooms to appreciate & consider that don’t grow in my Zone 6 northwest USA garden. The drive there is enjoyable, & $10 to help support this garden’s existence is a bargain. Make the trip!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 April 2024
- Kyle SSpokane, Washington17 contributionsNice small botanical gardenWe decided to come here instead of going to the Garden of Eden on the road to Hana. Mainly just to save some time. We enjoyed it. It's small, but well maintained. Our kids were actually disappointed once it was over which was shocking haha. They had fun feeding the fish in the koi pond and walking around the easy paths. I would say it's worth coming here if you're wanting to see this part of the island in upcountry area. Otherwise, you're not really missing too much and it's probably not worth it.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 May 2024

Cute gift shop. The garden paths are kind of confusing. Cooler and not as humid because it higher up.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 July 2024
- AngelaGlacier, Washington74 contributionsPeaceful garden mazeThe privately owned garden was a treat! The views from the garden down the valley and over Kihei made for a nice drive up to the visit as well. I came early and there were few others around and it was nice and cool. The season I went is past its prime for a lot of blooms, but if you love plants don’t skip this visit!! The path meanders around all kinds of nooks and crannies. Not for wheel chairs or those who need a more stable pathway. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 September 2024

I wish I had read the Trip Advisor reviews of this "botanical garden" before making the long drive from Lahaina. I was expecting a real botanical garden, but this is a ramshackle collection of "specimens" that looked like they were strait from the shelves of Home Depot. The garden is poorly maintained, the pathways are badly cracked and uneven, making walking hazardous. The poor birds in the "bird sanctuary" should be released, they looked miserable and had no proper habitat to speak of. Most annoying was the woman at the entrance desk who would not let me finish a single sentence. She kept interrupting each question I tried to ask in the most condescending tone. This is certainly not a proper botanical garden, but rather a private family's rambling backyard with barely readable identification plaques on a few of the plants, the signage was a joke (see photo). The trouble was that the signage was so old it was unreadable. Save your $10 and skip this. It is not worth the time nor money.

I loved the variety of flowers at the Kula Botanical Garden and peacefully walking through the gardens. As other readers have stated, this is not a manicured and formal botanical garden but full of somewhat wild and interesting flora. After visiting here, we went to the Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm, which was more popular and overrun with tourists. I felt the lavender farm offered far less interesting plant specimens but featured their many lavender products for sale. At least the Kula Botanical Garden had a decent restroom and an easy drive to reach the entrance.

Clearly a work of love for the community and the family that owns it. Great recovery after last years flood. If you love plants or just a beautiful walk through a garden this gem is well worth the very reasonable price. The views towards the west Maui mountains are also great

We were pretty let down by this place and dont get the reviews. When I asked the women at the front how long it would take to go through, she said 45 mins to an hour if we explore all the parts. Well we explored every trail and we were done in about 20 mins. That’s with quite a few photo stops and reading lots of signs. I know it is only $10 entry fee, but I’d say it’s worth $3 at best, and that’s on top of the long drive to get there. Definitely don’t go out of your way, but it’s ok if you are killing some time before your Ocean Vodka tour.

We were coming back from our Haleakala visit and was in the Kula area. It was worth the visit and $10 fee.. Nice to see a variety of fauna and flora. The Koi pond was off the visit due to damage from a storm. The garden wasn’t in a manicure condition in some areas but still wonderful to see some unusual flowers. They had a small gift store that had some nice Hawaiian souvenirs. We were given a small complimentary poster after we bought a couple of things in the gift store which was a nice momento,

Good way to spend about 1.5 hours on the way up or down from Haleakala. We have been to lots of botanical gardens in Hawaii and the one we like best is near Hilo but his on is probably #2. It is privately run but has a wide variety of pants we had never seen before. Admission is $10 and that seems about right. Everything is very well marked and Identified. Lots of waking up and sown hill but the trails are gradual and I did not have much trouble, even with a chronic bad left ankle. It is not world class but it is very good for Hawaii. This was our second visit in the last 30 years.

A very nice walk through an amazing variety of flora from all over the Pacific region. Despite a recent landslide that closed parts of the garden and the need for additional TLC (they are having trouble hiring gardeners), our group of 2 couples had a very pleasant 90 min stroll through the gardens. One focus is bromeliads (pineapple is in this family) of which there are many varieties. The owners are also very friendly folk, and it was uncrowded when we were there, a plus during this pandemic.

Enjoyed a wonderful stroll through this delightful garden, appreciating the beauty and the cooler temps compared to sea level. This is not an immaculately manicured garden, but rather work of dedication by one family who invite us into their unique creation to explore and learn. Plant are generously tagged so we can learn about plant types and origins. Pathways wind through the garden providing a wide variety of views and vistas. Started in the early 1970's, many of the plantings are now of an impressive size. Carve out 1 to 2 hours depending on your pace and know the site is on a hillside and requires some walking up inclines. And their are many beautiful places to sit and rest!

Are there lots of flowers blooming in December @ the botanical gardens on the grounds
Written 17 November 2019
There is always something blooming. I found things a little tired in September but I heard they were recovering from a storm.
There is a great view of the valley from up there and we enjoyed some relief from the record heat they were experiencing. I had been here 27 years ago and things seemed more vibrant then. It is still a nice way to spend an hour or two.

Is there public transportation between Lahaina and the kula botanical garden? Is so what is it and what is the cost?
