We left Kaanapali at 7am and went the back way around so we could get here first, and arrived around 9:30, so it was not crowded at all! It just happened to be gloomy, which is unpredictable, but so so happy we beat the crowds! Would recommend doing the drive backwards if you have a jeep.…

May 1973. Walked solo. Tried to get to the bottom of a horrendous sounding waterfall (Makahiku) Had no idea what it was, but it sounded good. Damn near died. Pulled myself out of a near death experience. Saved myself, should not have survived. Before all this tourist trails and beautiful experience stuff. Stay on the trail.Don't let me scare you off. Took back road in. Its in good condition overall. About 3 hrs from Kahana. Good weather. Around 76 at the pools. Ranger said they are closed due to high water. I dont get that. Been coming here since the 60s long before there was a ranger station here back in the days you just pulled into a field to park. The pools you normally swim in looked just fine to me. I think this is a case of the park service being over protective. We enjoy the drive - beautiful and rugged on back road, rain forest on Hana Hwy. Its up to you to decide if 6 hrs in the car is worth it with the risk the pools will be closed.…

Once you have parked in the Haleakala NP parking area you can take the easy hike to the pools. But do the entire loop trail since you will find other things to see.
