The signs could definitely stand out a little more as to which is the main trail. There were quite a few broken off trails as well as bike trails, saw a random doll in the woods & like left with a sprained ankle. Pretty sure I got cursed.

We hiked the trail on Dec 26. We never made it to the top because of the mud. It had rained most of Christmas Day so doing the hike the following day wasn't a good idea. The climb got steeper and you needed to pull yourself up by holding onto the rocks. But because of the very slippery mud, one of us turned back, and the other continued until she got hurt on the rocks.

Starts off easy then gets real steep, real quick. We hiked Likeke Falls the day before with my mother (74 yrs old and in decent shape) who handled that with ease. This one was way too much. So, it's for people with good stamina and experience. The views are defiantly worth it. The hike to the second box was not as impressive. But it was close and relatively easy after your at the first box.

Went one afternoon and it was so muddy and dangerous! Waited one full sunny day and it was better but still pretty hard. Steep coming down and lots of rocks. Make sure you keep going after reaching the first pillbox, the second one with the peace sign has a better view.

We started around 2 pm. Still quite a few hikers but not too busy or hot. It rained the night before, so we had to watch our step at the beginning. Once you climb the first quarter mile, the trail is easy and shady. Good trail for dogs and kids. Fun hike.

I know I'm not the first person to say this, but let me reiterate: Do not hike this trail after it rains! We went after 2 days of no rain and it was still quite muddy. I can't imagine what it was like just after the rain. That being said, it was totally worth it. The views of the North Shore and surfers are pretty cool. The only down side is that the trees and vegetation have grown up tall to obstruct the view slightly. I don't want them to cut the trees or anything but it's worth knowing this before you go. My 60-year-old parents were able to hike up and down without incident so it's pretty easy. Definitely worth about 90 minutes of your time to go up, enjoy the view, and wander back down.

Lovely hike.
How to find the entrance: find the sunset beach park sign. Cross the road into the elementary school. You'll see a path opposite the school on the left with a sign saying it's closed. Not sure why it says this as there are enough people going up. See pic.
Tricky bit is the mud. Don't attempt it with slippers. Another tricky bit is to find the second pillbox. After the first, go down the narrow path. Keep going until you see tall grassland. Follow literally into it. Keep going down it is still a path until you see it. The view at the 2nd pillbox is even better.
Lots of beautiful birds on the whole trek. Saw a pest but to us, an unusual three horn lizard.
Ropes are patchy ie not all the way so be prepared to grab onto trees. We are experienced hikers and to enjoy it all plus not fall too much, took around 2 hours return. Definitely go during daylight hours as most of the time it's a covered hike. Some exposure but minimal so if you're bad with heat just take a hat.
The 2nd pillbox has a peace sign. We saw most people who came down earlier than us have slipped and fell. So dress accordingly. Would not recommend wearing teva.
The path was clear to us but I can see it's easy to get lost, especially if it rains. So try to stick to areas that have the actual stairs. No shortcuts as it's steep and too slippery. The fall would be too high.
Don't forget to stop by the Laniakea beach for the turtles or if lucky, hawaiian monk seal if you're returning to haleiwa.

We did this hike early in the morning wearing Tevas. We were warned that this can be a muddy trail but luckily hit it right and it was pretty dry. Make sure to hike all the way to the second pillbox for the best vista.
As others have said, park at the elementary school and hike up from the trail head there. The lot can fill up, so go early. School drop-off is apparently around 8am, so avoid that too. We met a few mom's on the trail that do the kid drop and then do the hike.

This is a reletively short hike but the first 2/3 of the trail is VERY steep and very muddy. Once at the top, the view is sensational! Walk another 5 minutes from the first pillbox to the second one for the best view. We had a (dirty) blast hiking this trail.

It is only a quick, short hike as some reviewers mentioned if you stay on the path they are indicating. As you are going up you will notice a rope. This rope is not (as I thought from my view below it) blocking off the path but is actually a rope to help you up. Stay on this path. I did not stay on this path and took another worn path which led me up a very rocky, tricky path and to another look out point which is not as wide open as the intended hike. When I started to go back down I followed another path unintentionally which led me all over the mountain for 2 hours before I could get cell phone reception to find out which direction I should be heading to go back down. I was all over this mountain and never ran into anyone to ask for help. I found paths marked with white, pink, and yellow or green, and one marked "forest" but none marked with Ehukai Pillbox. I found a BMX trail and a large clearing with picnic tables in the middle of the forest. I was getting a bit nervous as my partner decided to stay behind half way up and I could not contact him. Don't go alone unless you see other people that are also hiking and you can follow them.
