We walked the Embarcadero by the Ferry Building, Alcatraz Pier, Pier 39 and all over the Fisherman's Wharf area. We did it both during the day and in the late evening. There are great views of the bay, many restaurants and interesting buildings all along...More

My husband has family in SF so we visit at least once a year. The Embarcadero is his favourite walk in the city. It's not so crowded on a weekday, and it's only touristy at Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. The eastern portion is pretty...More

A very pleasant walk with great views over the bay. Lots of places to stop for a refreshment or two. It seems to be the place for the owners of boom-box Harleys and 1960s Chevies to show off their stuff!

The easiest way to get around the touristy areas of SF. Some neat and quiet spots along the way (if you know where to look). Watch out for those on the electric scooters - they're not locals, and have no idea how to operate them...

We walked a ton, and loved it. Just touristy with lots of shops, places to eat, tours and museums. Boys age eight and nine loved it. For the crowds, the place was very clean. Park at back and walk down, seems to be about half...More

This is a great street - wide with some greenery and lots to see and do on it. There is a cruise ship pier where cruise ships are often seen. There is the ferry to Alcatraz island from here. There is also an aquarium and...More

Walked along here after the Alcatraz tour to the Farmers Market and then into the city. The farmers market was great!

This is an easy walking area. But definitely not a short walk. Lots to do along every pier. Great views over the bay.

My wife and I visited 'The Embarcadero' on a couple of occasions during a short four day vacation we had in San Francisco in March 2018. For us, it was a nice time of the year to visit as it was not too busy, and...More

Not only was this my first trip to San Francisco, but anywhere west of Texas. And for me, I think the Embarcadero was my favorite part. Great scenery with a wide variety of shopping.

The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds
of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian
ristorante come together to create the charming
neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping
grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of
North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always
suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in
the city exude as much European charm and style.

We didn't find it necessary to have a rental car in the city. Taxis are very inexpensive and lots of public transport options. With cable cars it can be a bit tricky driving if you're not used to it. We hired a car for trips... More
