Crowded but a respite nonetheless

Grounds are beautiful but very populated by locals. Lots of open spaces for picnics. Greenhouse was expensive and ordinary.

This is a huge park with trees dating back over 100 years. The park is divided up into areas covering different parts of the world. Make sure you have at least one hour to wonder round.

Small by comparison to other large city gardens. Variety of plants not as big as one would expect. May be this is the wrong time of year but it was more sparse than expected. Having said that it made for a nice relaxing day. Would recommend it as a half day trip. (Located a short drive from the city center.... More

We were lucky as there were still things in bloom mainly from other continents even though it was November. The gardens make for a great walk in a setting of varying gardens. Each area is a different garden. Took about an hour to leisurely walk through.

It was beautiful with flowers in unexpected places. We found the map and walkways confusing. The garden where one is invited to smell and pinch/pick a leaf was our favorite part.

So, this used to have a more difficult name. For years it was known as Strybing Arboretum, after the garden's first benefactress. The name change to the San Francisco Botanical Garden is more descriptive and undoubtedly helped increase the numbers of people enjoying the multiple "in situ" collections which exist in the garden. Interested in other Mediterranean climates (like South... More

We visited on September 6, 2016 it was 81 degrees, and I was told by one of the local merchants here that it was one of the hottest days of the year. It couldn't have been more beautiful. Just take a walk through the meandering paths and smell the blossoms. Most of the species presented here are marked, so you... More

We are still working our way through Nat Geo's best public gardens and the San Francisco Botanical Garden is certainly deserving of being on the list. We were actually killing time in Golden Gate Park, there was easy parking right by the gate, and it was free that day! We got a late start and they kicked us out after... More

The sheer size of these gardens is impressive. They have a wonderful variety of plants and trees from many regions of the world. I guess the climate is mild enough that they can grow plants from Australia to the tropics to China. It is a wonderful outing on a fine sunny day for all ages.
