Top ways to experience Lombard Street
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.

- Colleen H.Vallejo, California143 contributionsFun to Drive Down This Winding Little StreetPopular landmark to take visitors from out of town. We went on a Sunday afternoon, and hit a lot of traffic getting to Lombard Street and then getting to the Bay Bridge to go home. But it was still fun driving down this historic landmark.Visited April 2023Written 17 April 2023
- kbs1010Troy, Michigan72 contributionsGreat ViewThere are a lot of people that walk to the street, so you have to be very careful not only of the curves but also your fellow tourists. We were in a line of about fifteen cars, so didn’t wait a long time for our turn. The view is AMAZING. I would recommend going over if you get a chance while in San Francisco.Visited May 2023Written 26 May 2023
- TravelerCentralFLAClermont, Florida1,377 contributionsReally Unusual Street with a Great ViewWe drove down Lombard Street on our visit to San Francisco. It is sometimes known as the crookedest street because it winds downhill in almost switchback fashion. The homes in the area are charming and the street is unusual. It is worth a visit if you can drive there. There are a lot of tourists who walk it and you have to watch for pedestrians. I am not sure if I would feel comfortable walking it because of the mix of cars and pedestrians.Visited May 2023Written 2 June 2023
- Charles WSt. Petersburg, Florida99 contributionsBe ready to ExerciseSo if you love to walk try walking up Lombard St from China Town. We started at Washington Square . I'm a little too old for steep walks but I did make it to the bottom of the switchback. My two grandchildren actually ran to the top. the views are amazing and I was tired at the end. Get exercise !Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 July 2023

- SallyPembrokeshireWales, United Kingdom134 contributionsQuirky Lombard StreetLombard Street is definitely worth a visit whilst in San Francisco. We drove down the 8 curvy hairpins whilst on a private Mini Convertible tour (see other review) and then later that day went back there and walked up the 200 + steps from the bottom to the top of it. Very quirky road with beautiful views over the bay and beautifully manicured gardens on both sides of the road. You need to have a fair level of fitness to climb the steps but if you take it easy it can be done at your own pace to enjoy the views.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 August 2023

But must hate the tourists always hanging around A must see and it free.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2023
- WaddlerYork, United Kingdom10,391 contributionsNovelty streetVery busy with tourists and its quite a novelty street with its several bends. Folks enjoy driving down. I think the best thing about it is the view across to Coit Tower. There's some pretty houses here covered in flowers too.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 September 2023

Walked up the stairs one side to the top, got some more photos and then walked down the stairs the other side. - Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee2,325 contributionsNice to see, not much elseThis is one of those streets that you've known about for years and you know will be a big tourist attraction. We didn't drive down it on our most recent trip to San Francisco, but we walked alongside it and got to see it, which was neat. It seems like a bit of a pain to actually drive down it since it's crazy busy and you're just sitting in traffic, but it's nice to actually see something that you've known about for years.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023

I had heard a lot about this street and everybody recommended us to visit this street during our stay in San Francisco.
After visiting Lombard Street, I can only say that visit to San Francisco would be incomplete if you fail to visit Lombard Street.
We could see people trying to drive along its twisted and winding road without crashing. It was real fun when we climbed up and down this street.

Overall it was interesting to see. When we first arrived there were cars backed up for blocks and going to wait hours to drive down the hill. We saw it from the bottom and it was fun to see. However, I would never wait hours to drive on a bendy road.
We were there on early Christmas morning and were to drive it. There was one other car there. No waiting.

Lombard street is a San Francisco classic. Featured in many films. There is not much to it really-a one way winding street through a very pretty neighbourhood. But you’ve got to go there on a SF walk or catch the cable car.

The alledged crookedest street in the world. One way traffic downhilled with great view of Coit Tower in front of you. Tons of tourists-some walking down the road so you need to be very careful. Glad I don't live on the street-trying to get in and out of your garage must be almost impossible. Beautiful gardening at every turn. Major photo opportunity
Just know one thing- most natives know it isn't even the crookedest street in San Francisco. Vermont Street is and there are no tourists there.

I have visited about 12 major cities in the USA 🇺🇸 since 1985 and San Francisco in California is one of the most splendid cities that I have even seen in the USA 🇺🇸 that needs a special mention.
The city is known for its steep rolling hills and eclectic mix of architecture across varied neighborhoods, as well as its cool summers, fog, and landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, along with the Chinatown. Lombard Street is known for the one-way block on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, where eight sharp turns are said to make it the most crooked street in the world. It was very exciting to visit this street that was distinctly unique and it was a travellers delight !

Én Los Angelesben a Hollywood hotelben laktam. Ott volt ingyenes wi-fi és internet is. Vodafonos a kártyám a férjemé t- homos. Gond nélkül néztük a híreket . Rengeteg helyen rá tudtunk kapcsolódni az ingyenes hálózatokra is menet - séta közben . Semmilyen más kártyánk nem volt. Gondtalanul beszélgettünk az otthoniakkal is! A férjem többször csinált utalásokat a bankján keresztül !!!! A Google remekül működött !

La strada è breve, pendente e turistica; il tempo di percorrenza dipende anche, se la pecurri dal basso verso la cima o al contrario. In ogni modo essendo molto carina e affollata, io pianificherei una permanenza tra mezz’ora e 45 minuti.

Hi we are coming to San Francisco next April and staying at fisherman wharf. Does the cable car go from fisherman’s wharf up to the top of Lombard street or do you need to walk from F.W.? I have wanted to see the road for years, so intend on visiting it along with some of the other sites S F has to offer.

Hi, yes the street cars run along Hyde Street and there is a stop at the top of Lombard Street. There is a path down the right hand side of Lombard Street you can walk on, there is no actually footpath that twists with the road itself. Best views are from the top.

Whats the best way to see Lombard street & is it close to a central area?.. should we just get a taxi to drop us there? The SF city tour I am doing sadly does not go here

The Powell and Hayes cable car stops at Lombard Street. You can catch the cable car at Powell and Market Street or Fishermans Wharf. You can then walk to Chinatown which is about a 10 minute walk afterwards.
