This tour was a gift for my wife's birthday. We are fans of walking architectural tours, having done a couple in Chicago a few years back. Rick is a super tour-guide, with excellent knowledge of both the architectural styles we saw, the architectural history, and the history of that part of San Francisco in general. It's impressive that we saw... More

Great tour by a great guide, lots of information about the city history and how it affected the how the city looks right now. The whole 2-2.5 hour tour takes place at a surprisingly small area but you'll see a lot. And even more importantly you'll hear a lot of background information from Rick explaining what is unique about those... More

Fantastic tour that provided a real insight and appreciation of both old and new architecture in San Francisco. While the tour only covers a small area, I was amazed at the wealth of history and information that was contained in about four city blocks. Also loved hearing about POPOS - what a brilliant idea. Ricks commentary was interesting, and contained... More

Having occasion to spend a day in the city with my daughter, who attends SFSU, I was looking for something new and interesting for us to do. Since we're both interested in the fascinating architecture in SF, I looked up architecture tours and found Rick Evans'. Fortunately, we were able to join the tour on the same day (just call... Rick's architecture walking tour is both educational and fun. I have been to that area many times, but I never noticed the things Rick pointed out on the tour. I will see the area with new appreciation now. Rick obviously has a passion for the subject. His commentary was very good. Recommended.

Rick is just a terrific tour guide. He knows the history, background and setting for this tour and has such depth and breadth of all that is San Francisco. His tour is done in a good spirit without being too pedantic or professorial . We enjoyed every minute of our time and walked away with a great understanding on this... More

If you are visiting San Francisco you need to make this one of your first stops as the information that Rick shares will provide you with things to do the rest of your stay. My teenage (16) son and I would rank it among the top two things we did in our two week tour of Las Vegas, LA, Marina... More

We've taken Rick's architectural tour twice, and loved it! Rick is knowledgeable and passionate about San Francisco's architecture, and he makes the topic fascinating for his tour guests. The tour is 2 1/2 hours long and it all happens in a 2-3 block area, so it is not strenuous.

For two people "of a certain age" (74 and 85) this tour was perfect. It was focused and very interesting but not strenuous.

Staying in Financial District

Neighbourhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
