We have been thrilling audiences in San Francisco since 1923. We are known for commissioning numerous world premieres, training some of opera's greatest young artists and being one of the world's leading opera companies. Come visit us during our fall season (September - early December) or our summer season (late May - early July) and enjoy an incredible night out.

The few times we am able to attend opera performances, they are special. Worth the trip to San Francisco for anyone.

A lovely auditorium with good accoustics. Production standards are very high and the the artistes at the performance we attended (Rigoletto) were world class. Great chorus work and inspired orchestral playing - fantastic.

If you love opera, there is no better place to hear and see performances. The season runs from early September to early December, with a short season in early summer.

With all the travel I have done, no place is like this place at Christmas. Staging, actors and story are still wonderful year after year. It marks the holiday season. Go and enjoy.

Recently attended the opening night of the San Francisco Opera "Rigoletto" a grand occasion. Any performance at the war memorial opera house is worthwhile attending. Generally elegant respectful audience, spectacular auditorium with the occasional person nodding off to sleep! Stepping out onto the balcony at the interval to experience the full view of the splendid City Hall dome with a... More

First-rate productions in a gorgeous setting. Maestro Nicola Luisotti brings passion, talent, and an exquisite sense of taste to each season.

Welcoming and world class. After moving from Seattle which is more like a village staged opera I was impressed and astonished at the quality and staging. If you are to attend the opera for the first time and you can not afford or get tickets to the Met in NY or La Scala this is for you.

Ok, it is not the Met,but nothing is. It is an excellent opera company. They have really upgraded the singing in the past 5 years and you can see some of the world's great opera stars perform here. I think the casts are very even as well, so you don't have a stand-out star, with a mediocre supporting cast. If... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
