From Washington Square we made the slow walk up the steep hills to get to the start of the Filbert Steps. The stairs are a bit steep but there are resting spots at every level and when you reach the top you arrive at Coit Tower. On the way down, go slow and hold onto the railing.

I've noticed the Filbert Steps on several occasions while visiting Levi Plaza. As I had a few hours to wait for my clients to finish their meeting, I decided to take the steps to Coit Tower for the exercise, if nothing else. It IS a good exercise, and a lot more fun that a stair-stepper at the gym <LOL>. And... More

If you have a choice when to go, don't do now. There are so many beautiful flowers and trees, but at this time of the year, you see mainly - green. The way up is quite strenous and exhausting for many. You can also walk down :) and there is a Starbucks at the end to the left ..

Filbert Street is one of two separate ways to reach the tower via stairs. This North Beach access point is on the north side of Washington Square Park. While it is the easier climb of the two stairways, it is not very scenic. If you want a more picturesque setting and don’t mind a more strenuous climb, then take the... More

San Francisco is truly a walking town! While many drive around in cars/taxis/Uber, I highly recommend exploring this world class city on foot. The Filbert Steps are yet another way to build up your appetite for all the wonderful food the City has to offer.

These steps have the typical features found in other steps: 1) they have risers and treads; 2) they require more effort going up than going down; and 3) they provide the option to go up OR down. What makes these steps cool is they are located in a place where there are numerous beautiful views of the bay, the cityscape,... More

Seems a good idea and looks easier than perhaps it is - can be an effort but worth it when you see the views from the top

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
