About
From its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point protected San Francisco harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period.

Great photo spot for Golden Gate Bridge
This is a great location for a close-up look of the Golden Gate Bridge. From here one can also get a good view of the Alcatraz Island and downtown San Francisco. Parking is available but it can fill up pretty quickly on a busy day.

    Unique history
On our trip, we entered San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and the first site we stopped at was Fort Point. Various forts have been constructed on this point to protect San Francisco Bay since 1784 when the Spanish constructed Castillo de San Joaquin near this site. The current version of the fort was constructed from 1854-1861 and then modified in 1892. Forts like this are interesting to visit, since there are not many similar historical-type forts in the US. It also provides a great view from underneath the Golden Gate Bridge as it stretches out across the San Francisco Bay. The fort offers guided tours and has a small theater with a short, informative film.

    Great historical site!
Fort Point is a very interesting historical site that's located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge at the San Francisco end. It was built in the lead up to the Civil War (completed in 1861), but was never engaged in battle. It's very interested to explore the fort and pretty much everything is open. There's multiple levels of the fort that you can explore and many interesting displays that contain the history of the fort. The views of the Golden Gate bridge are worth the visit too as you get an underside view of the bridge when you're in the fort and you get an oblique view of the bridge from the parking lot (which was my favorite). It's a great place to visit and learn more about the history of San Francisco!

Fort Point, a national historic site stands beneath the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The fort has been preserved for its unique mason work & outstanding military architecture.
Of course it has no military value now , it is worth watching & a fine example of mason art.
The fort ( will 4 floors ) tells the story of its years spent guarding the Golden Gate.
You will have excellent views of Golden Gate & surroundings

Entry is free for all .

This little park offers great views of the bay, the city and the bridge. The Fort itself is very interesting historically. Give your little time to walk around. Parking is limited. This is also a pivotal location in Hitchcock's classic movie Vertigo.

Definitely a "cool place " to go. As living in the central valley, we decided to leave the heat for cooler temps of the bay. A great vantage point to see the bridge. Weekdays are great for Covid "Social Distancing" as it wasn't crowed and plenty of parking. This was a first stop of three to get different views of the bridge.

My sons and I hiked down to Fort Point on our recent visit to San Francisco. The hike is not very long from the parking lot up the hill. We did not tour the fort, but we did enjoy the views from the outside as well as the views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and Alcatraz. It was a cool day, but we enjoyed watching people sailboarding near the point. We got some good pictures. I recommend a visit to Fort Point.

We got to San Fran late afternoon and I'm so glad we made it to this point before the sunset. It wasn't too crowded and it was a amazing site to see at that time of day. I can see us returning to this point on our next trip.

We have visited SF many times, but on this trip we walked along the water to Fort Point. This is an old fort and is really interesting. We climbed the circular stairs inside the fort to stand under the Golden Gate Bridge. The views under the bridge were fantastic. Don't miss this!

I wasn't planning on visiting Fort Point, but decided to go in as I was visiting the Golden Gate Bridge and the fort happened to be open that day. It was really cool to walk around and learn about the history of the fort and its usage in the days before the bridge was built. You can also get a really nice view toward downtown San Francisco from the top.
