From its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point protected San Francisco harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period.

I've been here many times over the years. If you have any interest in history, this is a must see. Even if you aren't a history buff, you might be after visiting. The views are wonderful. There is no entry fee, though donations are welcome. A great trip to combine with a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Imagine back to the era of the Civil War! Fascinating for me and all history buffs. Even though a shot was not fired in anger (I believe), this historic place brings a person back to this era, and stokes the imagination to boot. Did I mention the views? A must see!

The fort is the perfect place to see the incredible engineering feat that is the GG. Underneath it's majestic structure is probably the best view you get.

It real pretty there but crazy cold and windy. It was even in Grand Theft Auto too. Some criminal had a club there. Not possible.

I love the experience of visiting Fort Point - the old fort was an important part of the bay defenses prior to modern warfare and special accommodation was made to protect it when the Golden Gate Bridge was built overhead. Views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the parking lot are unmatched and the cluster of nearby surfers braving the... More

Hidden for too long, tourists should add this fort to their SF tour itinerary. Nothing too fancy nor glamorous, history buffs would appreciate this mini museum about the protectors of our beloved Golden Gate during the civil war era. Explore the surrounding mini torpedo wharf which is an excellent spot for photography. Breathtaking city views all around especially from under... More

Civil War-era fort right underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. How can you beat it. Well, it's FREE to see and explore. Just when you think San Francisco can't get better you realize there's a historic Civil War-era fort the the most beautiful location on the West Coast--under the Golden Gate Bridge. Inside it's an interesting historical site. Outside you'll get... More

Though Ft. Point was closed the day I was here this is a great place to see the Golden Gate Bridge, city skyline and walk along the bay. There is a little souvenir shop nearby which is great for taking some time to get out of the chilly breezes. A good spot for great photos of the bridge or tossing... More
