Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's not for the faint of heart, just act like you own the place and don't look surprised when you see something outta the ordinary, I love the Tenderloin , it's a fun place to be especially at night. Good people and lots of culture. If your a square stay home, and if your scared go to church.

we stayed in a hotel nearby… never have i seen anything quite like this… i’m parisian so i know homelessness is a big issue (we are dealing with it in france) but this is extreme. we cannot leave the hotel… you simply do not want to walk around. i have 2 girls, 12 and 14. my 12 year old has never been so scared, she was catcalled by a group of young male adults the majority of which were high or drunk and then a woman in her mid 40s prompted to strip and swear at us whilst naked. not a pleasant sight. this happened at 4pm in bright daylight. please take this into consideration.

San Francisco has a homeless problem that is deep and complicated. In an effort to be compassionate, the homeless are not evicted from their encampments (there are, in fact, SRO-type shelters nearby) and the cause of much of the homelessness is opioid dependency, mental illness, or a combination of the two. The result, though, is a sight, sound, and smell that shocks visitors. Estimates of the number of street people in the tourist area of San Francisco range from 8,400 to more that 15,000, and it is not going to change anytime soon. On a one-day visit this October, I saw public urination in progress, the aftermath of public defecation, an open-air drug deal, and lots of aggressive panhandling. It isn't a reason to not visit the city, but it is something you need to be prepared for - or as prepared as you can be for something that is out of character in a city as beautiful as the one you have chosen to visit.

While wandering around the Union Square area on foot we found ourselves walking through this crummy neighborhood. If possible try to avoid this area after dark.

What could be an interesting part of the booming city, old buildings etc so the focus has now shifted to being an area that you prefer to avoid. In the middle of it all, cafes and restaurants are struggling to conduct business as usual.Have rarely seen so much human misery linked to mental illness and drug abuse.

San Francisco on the whole is really very bad for open drug use, homelessness, lunatics on the street and generally some of the worst sights you will ever see in the western world. However, the Tenderloin area is the epicentre of this hell hole and is off the scale, walking the streets is a like an apocalypse film.

This downtown neighborhood has always had a large amount of poverty, now lots of immigrants. So it is full of great ethnic restaurants, one of the best features. Also you don't want to miss some of the superb old architecture. But sadly there is a lot of dirt and people living troubled lives on the streets.

It's a big stretch of the city addled with high rates of homelessness/lawlessness. It was a scary experience as it was after 7pm, especially there were no pedestrians around other than drug dealers, sex workers, and homeless. It was a truly post apocalyptic experience. I have seen enough poverty in India I believe, but this was a different level of squalor. Public urination, defecation, drug use, unleashed dangerous breeds of dogs with lost owners. Just a few streets away there are futuristic driveless cars and luxurious life, and one wonders what the authorities should be doing to help the needy in such a rich country. Avoid especially if traveling solo.

Never in my life have I seen anything like this. I am from the UK and have seen poor mental health, drug addiction and poverty before, but this was absolutely shocking. I was terrified. someone threatened to kill me as I walked down the street minding my own business. People in the street shout at you. The smell
of urine is unbearably strong. I will never forget the smell. Everyone is completely out of their mind. Do not go anywhere near this place.

Wild area. Saw a lot of misery, homelessness, trash and drugs. I wouldn’t recommend at all to go there after sunset.
The outer areas of the tenderloin are alright, a lot of different cultures and personalities.
