Wow! This place is remarkable in the best of ways. It has the old hippy/beatnik vibe still going on but not in a tired/touristy way. There's a great range of beers on offer. and the décor is interesting - again it pays homage to its 1960'/1970's famed roots. We loved it and hope you will?

Right in the heart of San Francisco's beat generation district, this bar holds memories of remarkable visitors of the time.

We were there yesterday and it was such a good bar we went back today. Great for people watching. Reasonable prices and a good selection of drinks.

This place is all a part of the hip beat generation "thing " of San Francisco - a really querky fun place with nice staff - good selection of beers - where doesn't in Frisco - right next door to the hip generation bookshop - this is all part of it a fun. Enjoy.

This is a North Beach landmark, where Kerouac used to drink. It's very nicely decorated and preserved and is in a wonderful location, near where North Beach meets Chinatown. Vesuvio's is incredibly atmospheric. If you have a long evening to spare and have eaten already, you don't need to be anywhere else.

It looks like a museum, more than a coffe' shop or a bar or a place for living people, and i don't know if i like it. Walls full of beatin' memories (paintings, writings, hoots, newspapers etc) of the past. The present? a band of high tech gays have killing 'em softwarly...

Vesuvio's is a landmark in San Francisco, run by the best staff. The prices are reasonable, the staff makes sure you feel like a local, the history covers the walls and the neighborhood is great. City Lights Bookstore is next door and the staff (Tony Lioce!) will direct you to the best of the area. They have no problem telling... More

Vesuvio Café is a required stop for anyone interested in the Beat Generation Writers. Just across the Jack Kerouac Alley from City Lights Booksellers, it is a veritable museum; photos line the walls, many which can't be found anywhere else. Janet Clyde and her co-workers are congenial and welcoming. I stop in every time I'm in San Francisco! A must!

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighbourhood decorated with colourful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighbourhood.
